Socca
Wood-fired chickpea pancake
Nice's socca specialist for close to a century, a few minutes from Port Lympia. The chickpea-flour pancake is the order, cheap and eaten inside, outside or to go; it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Chez Pipo is a socca restaurant at 13 Rue Bavastro in Nice, a few minutes' walk from the old port (Port Lympia). It has made socca, the chickpea-flour pancake that is Nice's best-known street food, for close to a century, and suits anyone wanting a cheap, local snack or simple Niçoise meal.
A thin chickpea-flour pancake baked in large round pans in a wood-fired oven. At Chez Pipo it is cut into pieces that are golden and crisp at the edges and soft in the middle, eaten hot by hand with black pepper. Each batch comes straight out of the oven, which means a short wait at busy times. Pissaladière and tourte de blettes are among the other Niçoise specialities, and there are vegetarian and gluten-free options.
Around 120 seats fill long tables inside, with more outdoors. Both Nice families and visitors eat here, and prices are low, in keeping with the dish's street-food roots. A glass of chilled rosé is the usual drink with socca. Food can also be taken away.
From the Promenade des Anglais or Vieux Nice it is a 15 to 20 minute walk, or take tram line 2 to Port Lympia.
A man known as Pipo founded the restaurant in 1923, and its owner today is Steeve Bernardo. If you miss it in town, Chez Pipo also runs a branch in Terminal 1 of Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, airside on Level 2 near gate A33, serving socca, petits farcis, pan bagnat and pissaladière from early morning until about 22:30. It is a good last taste of Nice before a flight.
