In short

A restored colonial café, bar and restaurant on the corner of Taman Fatahillah in Jakarta's Kota Tua. Sightseers stop for Indonesian and Western dishes, coffee or an evening drink over the square.

Cafe Batavia is a historic café, bar and restaurant at Jalan Pintu Besar Utara 14, on the northwest corner of Taman Fatahillah, the main square of Kota Tua, Jakarta's old Dutch town. It serves Indonesian and Western dishes in a restored colonial building and suits sightseers who want lunch, coffee or an evening drink overlooking the square.

The building dates from the 1800s and is the second oldest on the square after the former City Hall, now the Jakarta History Museum. Dutch East India Company officials used it first, and over the years it also served as a home, an office and a warehouse. An Australian buyer restored it in 1992 and 1993, and the café opened in 1993. Jakarta Kota station, served by several commuter lines and the TransJakarta busway, is a short walk away.

A Javanese teak staircase climbs to the Grand Salon, an upstairs hall for about 150 diners with tall shuttered windows over Taman Fatahillah. Its walls are lined with vintage photographs of 1930s film stars and royalty. Downstairs there is a bar, a lounge and a small stage.

The menu mixes Indonesian favourites with Western comfort food, and plenty of guests come only for coffee or a drink in the old room. Prices are moderate for central Jakarta, though a minimum spend applies on the upper floor.

Opening hours are long. From Monday to Thursday the café opens 09:00 to midnight, on Friday 09:00 to 01:00, on Saturday 07:00 to 01:00 and on Sunday 07:00 to midnight. Hours change during Ramadan and on public holidays. Call +62 21 6915 5531 to reserve an upstairs window seat in the evening, which is the most requested spot.

Late afternoon is a good time to visit. The square below fills with rental bicycles and street performers, and a window table upstairs gives a clear view of it after a morning at the Jakarta History Museum.

The building was completed around 1837. Australian Graham James bought it in 1990 and restored it before opening the café, and the Winston Churchill bar downstairs was named the World's Best Bar by Newsweek International in 1996. The Grand Salon on the upper floor holds up to 150 guests, which makes it a common venue for private events.
