Traditional and reworked dishes from across Indonesia in Seminyak's Jalan Petitenget, named after the flag's red and white. Groups come for a polished dinner of shared plates.
Merah Putih is an Indonesian restaurant at Jalan Petitenget 100X in Kerobokan Kelod, in the Seminyak area of Bali. Named after the red and white of the national flag, it serves both traditional recipes and modern reworkings of dishes from across the archipelago, and suits groups who want a polished dinner of shared plates.
Jalan Petitenget is the restaurant strip behind Seminyak's beach clubs. Most diners arrive by taxi or scooter from Seminyak or Canggu, and traffic on the road gets heavy after sunset.
The building makes a strong first impression. Tall columns rise through a large open hall, reflective pools run along the floor and greenery softens the space, so the room feels grand without being formal.
The menu has two halves. One side covers traditional Indonesian dishes, the other modern plates that rework familiar flavours. Time Out has singled out the richly spiced beef cheek, braised jackfruit bao buns and chargrilled fish from Sulawesi. The best way to eat here is to order several plates from both sides of the menu and share them, which is why the restaurant works so well for groups. The bar mixes hibiscus-infused gins and spiced arak sours, and the wine list favours biodynamic and Old World bottles.
By Bali standards Merah Putih is a mid to upper range splurge. It opens daily for lunch from 12:00 to 15:00 and for dinner from 17:30 to 22:30; the restaurant's website gives 22:45 as the dinner close. Reservations are recommended, especially for dinner, on +62 361 846 5950 or through merahputihbali.com.
A table at about 19:00 avoids the worst of the evening traffic on Jalan Petitenget, where late arrivals can lose a lot of time in queues. Lunch is quieter and lets you see the architecture in daylight.
Executive chef Wiwik leads the kitchen, updating long-established recipes with spices from across the archipelago. The restaurant has a separate section for group bookings on its website, useful for larger parties planning a set meal.
