In short

A seafood tapas bar in El Born near Santa Maria del Mar, where diners sit at the counter and eat whatever comes off the griddle. Barceloneta metro is about five minutes away. It is closed on Sundays.

Cal Pep is a seafood tapas bar at Plaça de les Olles 8 in the El Born area of Barcelona's old town, near the Santa Maria del Mar basilica. It suits diners who like to sit at a counter, watch cooks at work and eat whatever comes off the griddle. Barceloneta metro station on line 4 is about five minutes away on foot, and the Picasso Museum is a short walk through the lanes.

Counter seating and letting the cooks choose

Most guests sit at a long counter facing the cooks, who prepare seafood and market dishes to order. Many diners skip the menu and let the staff decide what to bring. Plates are for sharing and arrive one after another, so the meal builds as you go. A back dining room is calmer, though it misses the counter show.

Regulars and critics single out prawns and squid straight from the griddle, cured ham, and a tortilla often called one of the best in Barcelona. Time Out, Insight Guides and DK Eyewitness have all reviewed it well over many years. Prices are higher than at an ordinary tapas bar because of the quality of the seafood.

Pep and his earlier restaurant

The name comes from Josep Manubens Figueres, known as Pep, who moved to this corner of El Born about three decades ago after running El Passadís del Pep nearby. The counter has about 20 stools, worked by a team of eight or nine cooks and waiters with little turnover. Orders grow out of short conversations with the barmen. Dishes reviewers name include bread rubbed with tomato and oil, spinach with chickpeas, bacon and black sausage, the fried "trifásico" of sole, whitebait, shrimp and squid, and a foie gras sausage in a Port reduction. The short wine list leans on crisp whites such as albariño and verdejo. Expect to wait 20 to 40 minutes for stools at busy times.

Queueing early for a counter seat

A queue forms before opening, and joining it early is the surest way onto the front counter. The room is loud, with cooks calling out orders and diners leaning in to see what is next.
