A pintxo bar and grill in San Sebastián's Parte Vieja, a couple of minutes from La Concha, known for Basque pintxos and seasonal wild mushrooms and listed in the MICHELIN Guide. It is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Ganbara is a pintxo bar and grill at Calle San Jerónimo 21 in the Parte Vieja, the old town of San Sebastián (Donostia). It suits travellers who want Basque pintxos and seasonal wild mushrooms in one of the town's long-standing bars. The Plaza de la Constitución and La Concha bay are a couple of minutes away on foot, so it fits easily after a morning on the beach.
Wild mushrooms are the house speciality. In season they are cooked simply in the kitchen and sent out hot, and they are the dish to order on a first visit. The counter is piled with pintxos, small Basque bites on bread or skewers, while the kitchen works in a grill house style with seasonal produce and local seafood.
A glass of txakoli, the lightly sparkling Basque white wine, is the usual pairing. Combining one or two cold pintxos from the counter with a hot dish from the kitchen gives the best picture of what Ganbara does.
Jose Ignacio and his wife Amaia opened Ganbara in 1984, and their daughter Nagore later joined them. San Sebastián's official tourism office lists it as one of the leading places to eat in the Parte Vieja. The dining room seats 55, there are vegetarian options, and dogs are welcome. You can also contact the bar by email at info@ganbarajatetxea.com.
The Michelin Guide Spain 2026 includes Ganbara in its selection and places it in its lowest price category. Pintxos are paid for piece by piece, so the bill depends on how long you stay.
The bar gets busy, with locals and visitors standing shoulder to shoulder.
