Deadwood
Deadwood travel guide
Wild Bill's last poker game, gold-rush brick and Black Hills casinos
A tiny Black Hills town where the 1870s gold rush still shapes every block of Main Street, now lined with casinos and history museums. Visit June to September, and late July for the Days of '76 rodeo. Two days is enough, longer if you use it as a Black Hills base. Prices are very high, and Visa Waiver travellers need an ESTA.
Deadwood fills a narrow gulch in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, about 42 miles north-west of Rapid City. Gold made it in 1876, Wild Bill Hickok died here that same summer, and the whole town is now a National Historic Landmark District with casinos tucked inside its brick fronts.
For three frantic years the camp held perhaps 25,000 people. Today the census counts barely 1,300, but Main Street still runs along the creek past saloons, hotels and gaming halls built after the gold rush, and the street is short enough to walk end to end in a quarter of an hour.
Most visitors come for the Old West story. Mount Moriah Cemetery holds the graves of Wild Bill and Calamity Jane on a steep slope above town, while the museums run by Deadwood History tell the story of the strike, the Victorian families who followed it and the town's own rodeo tradition.
Gaming is the other draw. It has been legal here since 1989 and turns up in hotel lobbies as readily as in private poker rooms. Lead, the old Homestake mining town a few minutes up the road, is so close that people often speak of Lead-Deadwood as one place.

Getting there
Rapid City airport, I-90 and US 14A
Nearly everyone arrives by road. Rapid City Regional Airport is the nearest with scheduled flights, and from there it is roughly an hour's drive north-west. From Rapid City follow I-90 west to Sturgis, then US 14A for about 12 miles into the gulch. Drivers coming east from Wyoming leave I-90 at exit 17 and have about 8 miles to go. There is no rail service and no regular intercity coach, but shuttle and taxi companies from Rapid City take pre-booked airport transfers, and Prairie Hills Transit runs bookable trips between Rapid City and the northern Hills.
- Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP)
- About 1 hour by car or pre-booked shuttle
- From Rapid City
- I-90 west to Sturgis, then US 14A west for 12 miles
- From Wyoming
- I-90 exit 17, then about 8 miles
- Prairie Hills Transit
- Bookable one-way or return rides to and from Rapid City
- Rent a car if you plan to see Mount Rushmore or Spearfish Canyon; public transport does not reach them.
Where to stay
Main Street hotels or the Lead hillsides
Choose Main Street if you want to walk to dinner, the museums and the casino tables; choose the edges if you want quiet and parking. Many historic hotels double as casinos, so ask for a room away from the gaming floor.
- Historic Main Street
- Restored hotels such as the Bullock, steps from Saloon No. 10; noise late at night
- Highway 85 south
- Larger resort-style casinos with parking; a trolley or drive to Main Street
- Lead and Terry Peak road
- Condos and resorts in the hills, handy for winter skiing; need a car
Getting around
The Deadwood trolley and Main Street on foot
Everything central lines up along Main Street, so walking is the norm except in a snowstorm. A trolley loops the town from early morning to the small hours for most of the year, with shorter hours in winter, linking Main Street with the hotels on the edges for a small fare. Driving is easy, but street parking is metered; there is free parking on Sherman Street a few blocks from the centre and a garage close to Main Street. Maps and brochures are at the History and Information Center on Sherman Street.
- Deadwood trolley
- Loops the town daily into the late evening, with shorter hours in winter
- Sherman Street lot
- Free parking a short walk from Main Street
- Mount Moriah Cemetery
- Reachable on foot, but the climb is steep
- Winter driving runs from late September to late April and snow can fall into May; hire a car with good tyres.

A two-day Deadwood plan from Saloon No. 10 to Mount Moriah
Two days covers the town: museums, cemetery and saloons on day one, Lead or Spearfish Canyon on day two.
Morning. Start at the Adams Museum on Sherman Street, the town's oldest history collection, then walk a few minutes to the Adams House on Van Buren Avenue for a half-hour tour of the Queen Anne interior.
Afternoon. Climb to Mount Moriah Cemetery. The steep path leads to Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, buried side by side above the gulch; Seth Bullock lies ten minutes further up. Then walk Main Street to Old Style Saloon No. 10.
Evening. Join the costumed ghost tour from the Bullock Hotel, led by actors playing Sheriff Bullock or his wife Martha, then try your luck at a table.
Day two. Drive a few minutes up to Lead for the mining history, or spend a morning at Tatanka: Story of the Bison just north of town before heading out to Spearfish Canyon or the Black Hills National Forest.
Cinnamon rolls, Main Street steaks and casino dinners
Deadwood eats like a mining town with a casino licence: hearty, late and mostly on Main Street. Breakfast is a good time to try the local cinnamon rolls; the Deadwood Miners Hotel on Charles Street serves them alongside burgers through the day.
For dinner, Main Street has a run of steakhouses and grills. Deadwood Social Club, at 657 above the saloon, leans Italian, Jakes at 677 is the formal dining room, and Mustang Sally's puts tables outside on Main Street in summer with burgers that locals rate. Bison appears on plenty of menus across the Black Hills, so look for it.
Every casino serves drinks, and many offer cheap meals to keep players at the tables. For a bar without slot machines, the Buffalo Bodega complex is long-standing and often runs karaoke. Book ahead for dinner in late July, when the town is full.
September calm, the Days of '76 Rodeo and Sturgis week
The best time to visit Deadwood is September, when days are still warm and the summer crowds have gone. July and August are warmest at about 28C, with the Days of '76 Rodeo in late July (25 to 31 July in 2027) and the Sturgis rally in early August filling every room.
Summer nights drop to 12-13C, and January runs from around 3C down to minus 10C. The wet season is spring: May averages around 128mm, the highest of the year, and April and June are not far behind.
The biggest week is the Days of '76 Rodeo at the end of July, a pro rodeo with a historic parade through town. Rooms vanish early, so book ahead or stay in Lead or Spearfish.
From October to April the museums shorten their hours and the casinos carry the town, while Terry Peak above Lead offers skiing.

Visa & documents
With an approved ESTA, citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries (most of Europe, the UK, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand among them) can stay up to 90 days. Everyone else needs a B-2 visitor visa, which means an interview at a US embassy. Since January 2026 nationals of a number of countries face full or partial entry restrictions.
Health & safety
Trouble is rare on a US trip. Petty theft and car break-ins are the most common problems for visitors, so leave nothing visible in a parked car, especially at trailheads. Natural hazards deserve real respect: hurricanes hit the south-east from June to November, and the west sees wildfires and extreme heat.
