Galata Tower is a medieval stone tower built by the Genoese around 1348 in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul. Now a museum, its top terrace gives a 360-degree view over the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus.
Galata Tower is a medieval stone tower built by the Genoese around 1348 above the Galata neighbourhood of Beyoğlu, north of the Golden Horn, and now a museum with a 360-degree terrace over the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus. Foreign visitors paid about €30 in 2026, in lira, with a separate evening ticket. Expect about an hour plus the queue.
Galata Tower rises above the Galata neighbourhood in Istanbul's Beyoğlu district, on the northern side of the Golden Horn. The Genoese, who ran a trading colony here, built it around 1348 as part of the walls of Galata and called it the Tower of the Holy Cross.
After the Ottoman conquest of 1453, Sultan Mehmed II ordered that the tower be preserved. An earthquake in 1509 damaged it, and repairs were finished in 1510. Over the following centuries it served as a prison, a store and a fire lookout. Fires in 1794 and 1831 led to rebuilding of the upper floors, a storm brought down the conical roof in 1875, and the present roof was added during a restoration in the 1960s.
The stone tower is 62.59 metres tall to the tip of its roof, with walls several metres thick, and its top floor stands about 40 metres above the street. An observation terrace runs round the top, giving a full circle of views over the Golden Horn, the historic peninsula with Hagia Sophia and the Süleymaniye Mosque, and the Bosphorus. Inside, the museum covers the history of the tower and the Galata area, including an animation of Hezârfen Ahmed Çelebi, said to have flown from the tower with artificial wings in the 17th century.
The tower reopened as the Galata Tower Museum on 6 October 2020 after restoration, and roof restoration work began in 2023. It is owned by the Directorate General of Foundations.
Entry is by ticket, and queues are long in the afternoon and at sunset, so arrive early. A lift takes visitors most of the way up, with the last floors by stairs. The tower is a short uphill walk from Karaköy tram stop or the Tünel funicular, and Istiklal Avenue is a few minutes away.
What does a Galata Tower ticket cost? Travel guides updated in 2026 put the foreign-visitor fee at EUR 30, charged in Turkish lira at the counter at the day's rate. Official e-tickets are sold on the Ministry of Culture's muze.gov.tr site. Several lookalike sites call themselves official but resell tickets at a mark-up, so check the web address before paying.
The tower opens daily from 8.30 am. A separate evening session, sold as its own ticket and not covered by the Museum Pass Istanbul, runs into the late evening. Museum Pass holders must enter during the daytime session.
Around the tower. The square at the foot of the tower is lined with cafes and is busy until late. Galip Dede Street, which runs up to Tünel, is known for music shops selling ouds, saz and other Turkish instruments. The Galata Mevlevi Lodge, where the whirling dervishes perform, stands at the top of the same street. Karaköy, down the hill, has the Istanbul Modern art museum and a waterfront with fish restaurants facing the old city.
