The building began in 1842 as a mansion for Antonis Dimitriou, a merchant from Lemnos, designed by Theophil Hansen. Efstathios Lampsas bought it in 1874, restored it and named it Grande Bretagne. In the Second World War it housed the Greek General Headquarters in 1940 and 1941, then the German command during the occupation and the British headquarters from 1944. In December 1944 a plan to blow up the British headquarters was called off once the plotters learned that Winston Churchill had arrived in Athens.
