It opened in 1962, was renovated in 2009 and connects indoors to Grand Indonesia mall. Hotel Indonesia was the country's first five-star hotel. President Soekarno commissioned it, worked on it with the architect Abel Sorensen, and inaugurated it on 5 August 1962, in time to house visitors to the 4th Asian Games that Jakarta hosted that year. The building took about two years to finish. The Bali Room, the hotel's historic function hall, is still in use for banquets, and the grand lobby hosts cultural exhibitions such as the 2024 kebaya show marking the hotel's 62nd anniversary.
Deluxe King rooms start at 44 m², and Grand Deluxe rooms reach 64 m². Many rooms look straight down on the Selamat Datang monument in the middle of the roundabout, about 260 m away. Executive rooms include lounge access, and interconnecting family rooms of 108 m² and 128 m² suit larger groups.
