Ithra, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Dhahran, was built by Saudi Aramco in a Snøhetta-designed building and opened in 2016, with a museum, library, cinema, theatre and children's museum. Entry is paid. Half a day covers the main spaces.
Ithra stands in Dhahran in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, close to the site of Dammam Well No. 7, where the first commercial oil in the kingdom was struck in March 1938. Its full name is the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, and Ithra means enrichment in Arabic. It was built and is run by Saudi Aramco, and was inaugurated by King Salman on 1 December 2016.
The centre was created to support culture, creativity and learning in the kingdom. Time magazine listed it among the world's greatest places in 2018.
The building was designed by the Norwegian firm Snøhetta. It looks like a cluster of smooth, rounded stones leaning against each other, wrapped in about 350 kilometres of stainless steel tubing. The tallest part, the Knowledge Tower, holds the library and the Idea Lab. Inside are a museum with galleries on Islamic art, Saudi heritage, natural history and contemporary art; a library with hundreds of thousands of books; a cinema; a 900-seat theatre; an energy exhibition; a children's museum; and spaces for workshops and festivals. Part of the building lies below ground, which keeps it cooler.
Ithra runs a busy year-round programme of exhibitions, film screenings, performances and reading events, including the Tanween creativity season.
Some areas are free to enter, while museum exhibitions, cinema and shows need tickets bought online or on site. The centre is usually closed one day a week. Check the Ithra website for current hours.
The four main volumes are arranged so that three rest on the ground while the fourth, the Keystone, is held up between them. The stainless steel tubes wrapped around them catch the low sun in the late afternoon, the best time for photographs from the gardens.
Visitor numbers reached about one million in 2019, and the centre is on Time magazine's list of the world's 100 greatest places. One of the museum galleries is devoted to Saudi culture across five regions of the kingdom, showing poetry, music, fashion and patterns through films, sound and objects; other galleries change with temporary exhibitions.
We check practical details such as entry rules, seasons and costs against official government and tourism sources.
