Hofuf travel guide
Khalas dates, a mud-walled fort and the caves of Jabal Al-Qarah
Hofuf is the main town of Al-Ahsa, a UNESCO-listed date oasis inland from Dammam. Come for Qasr Ibrahim, the covered souq, Jabal Al-Qarah's caves and a night on a palm farm, ideally from November to March. One or two days is enough. Costs are high, and the tourist eVisa covers many passports.
Hofuf is the main city of Al-Ahsa, an enormous oasis in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province and one of the largest date-growing areas anywhere. It sits inland from Dammam on the railway to Riyadh. People come for the palm groves, the covered souq, a mud-walled fort and the cool caves of Jabal Al-Qarah.
Start with the dates. Al-Ahsa's groves produce some of the most prized varieties in the kingdom, Khalas above all, and the oasis joined UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2018. In late summer the harvest fills the markets. The heat then is brutal. Come in winter for walking, and in August only if the date trade is the point.
Central Hofuf holds the two main sights. Qasr Ibrahim is a mud-built fort behind walls about 10 metres high, with a domed mosque inside. Close by, the covered Al-Qaisariya Souq sells dates, spices and bishts (the cloaks Saudi men wear over their thobes). In the evening, find a seat at Alsaid Coffee in the souq, where locals stay late.
Outside the centre the oasis spreads for kilometres. Jabal Al-Qarah is a hill of wind-carved rock whose narrow caves stay noticeably cool even in summer, and Jawatha Mosque, about 12 km north-east of town, marks the place where Friday prayers were first held outside Medina. Bring your own food to the caves; the stalls there sell little beyond shawarma.
For a slower stay, rent a mazra, one of the private farmhouses scattered among the palms. Many come with their own pool, and families book them by the day. Further out, the coast at Al-Uqair was the region's old port, where the 1922 Uqair Protocol with Britain fixed borders to the north.
Trains are the easy way in. The Riyadh to Dammam line stops here, about three hours from the capital and a little over an hour from Dammam. SAPTCO buses run the same routes more slowly. Taxis wait at the station but are hard to flag on the street.

Getting there
Rails from Riyadh and Dammam, not the airport
The train is the way to arrive. Hofuf station sits on the line between Riyadh and Dammam, with several departures a day in each direction, and the ride from Dammam is short enough for a day trip. Al-Ahsa International (HOF) has only a handful of routes, so most visitors fly into Dammam or Riyadh and ride the rails. SAPTCO coaches follow the same corridor more slowly. Taxis meet trains and buses, which matters, because they are hard to find once you are out on the street.
- Train from Dammam
- About 70 to 90 minutes
- Train from Riyadh
- About 3 hours
- SAPTCO coach
- About 2 hours from Dammam, 3.5 hours from Riyadh
- Air
- Al-Ahsa International (HOF) has mainly Jeddah flights (Saudia, flyadeal, flynas) plus flydubai to Dubai; Dammam (DMM) is the usual gateway
- Station taxis
- Wait at the train and bus stations for the ride into town
- Take a driver's number at the station; it saves a long wait for the return ride.
- Morning trains from Dammam let you reach Jabal Al-Qarah before the heat builds.
Where to stay
Souq-side rooms or a mazra in the palms
Stay in central Hofuf to be near the souq, Qasr Ibrahim and the station, or rent a mazra, a farmhouse among the palms with space, quiet and usually a pool, if you travel as a family or group with a car. Al-Mubarraz, the twin town just to the north, adds rooms but few attractions.
- Central Hofuf
- Closest to Qasr Ibrahim and Al-Qaisariya Souq, handy for late coffee; busy traffic and plain rooms
- King Khalid Street
- Home of the Al Ahsa InterContinental, the most polished hotel in town and an easy first night off the train
- Al-Mubarraz
- Quieter streets and extra choice when Hofuf is full, but a drive to the old centre
- Mazra farm stays
- Private houses among the date palms, rented whole by the day or night; bring food, and expect weekends to sell out
- A mazra is rented as a whole house, so it suits a family or group far better than a solo traveller.
Getting around
Station taxis, rentals and on-call oasis drivers
Getting around Hofuf takes a car, a taxi or an on-call driver, because the sights of the oasis, shared with the twin town of Al-Mubarraz, are scattered for kilometres among palm groves and farm roads. Only Qasr Ibrahim and Al-Qaisariya Souq are close enough to walk between, best in the cool of the evening. Taxis cluster downtown and at the stations but rarely cruise past on the road. Rental firms want your licence and ID. Many residents use on-call drivers, often South Asian, who will take you around the oasis or anywhere in the Gulf region.
- Taxi
- Downtown and at the train and bus stations; hard to flag elsewhere
- Car hire
- Several firms in town; bring your licence and passport
- Driver on call
- Booked by phone for a half day or a full loop of the oasis
- On foot
- Qasr Ibrahim to Al-Qaisariya Souq in the centre
- Jawatha Mosque is about 12 km north-east of the centre; combine it with Jabal Al-Qarah in one loop.

Weather in Hofuf, month by month
Hofuf is one of the hottest places on this site, averaging 46°C in July. January brings 22°C days and 9°C nights, and December is the wettest month at about 19 mm.
Climate figures are approximate long-term averages for Al Ahsa (World Meteorological Organization, via Wikipedia).
Al-Qarah Caves at dawn, Souq coffee after dark
Two days cover Hofuf and the Al-Ahsa oasis: Jabal Al-Qarah's caves, Jawatha Mosque and Qasr Ibrahim on the first, then Al-Qaisariya Souq and an afternoon at a palm-grove farmhouse on the second. Reach the caves early with lunch packed, and with a car and a third day add the old Gulf port of Al-Uqair.
Reach Jabal Al-Qarah early on day one. Its caves are narrow passages through wind-carved rock, cool inside even when the plain is baking, and a proper look takes longer than you expect. Drive on through the groves to Jawatha Mosque, about 12 km north-east of central Hofuf, where the first Friday prayers outside Medina are said to have been held. Rest in the afternoon, then walk Qasr Ibrahim and its domed mosque in the late light.
Day two is slower. Spend the morning in Al-Qaisariya Souq, tasting Khalas dates and looking at the bishts, the fine cloaks Saudi men wear on formal occasions. In the afternoon, head out to a mazra, one of the farmhouses among the palms; many come with a pool and are rented by the day. Come back for coffee at Alsaid in the souq, which gets busy late.
Khalas dates, red Hasawi rice and Souq coffee
Khalas dates and red Hasawi rice are the two foods to try in Al-Ahsa, both grown in the oasis around Hofuf. Buy dates in Al-Qaisariya Souq, drink cardamom coffee at Alsaid after dark, and pack a picnic for Jabal Al-Qarah, because outside town the choice shrinks to shawarma and snacks.
Al-Ahsa eats from its own fields. The oasis is among the largest date-growing areas anywhere, and Khalas, soft and caramel-sweet, is the variety locals rate highest; buy a box in Al-Qaisariya Souq and ask to taste a few others alongside it. The other local crop is Hasawi rice, a reddish grain grown in the oasis and prized across the Gulf. It turns up in home-style rice dishes cooked with chicken or lamb.
Coffee is the social glue. Arabic coffee, pale and spiced with cardamom, is poured in small cups and served with dates, and the coffee houses in the souq stay lively well after dark; Alsaid is the one to find. For lunch on a sightseeing day, plan ahead. A farm stay is the other way to eat well: families who book a mazra bring their own food and spend the day grilling under the palms.
Harvest heat and the cool-season window
November to March is the time for Hofuf, with December and January highs of 22 to 24C, the right weather for the souq and the caves. Summer is fierce, averaging 45 to 46C from June to August, and only people interested in the date harvest have much reason to come then.
Al-Ahsa runs hotter than the coast, and summer nights stay at 28 to 30C with no rain at all. That heat ripens the dates: late summer is harvest season, when the markets fill with fresh fruit and traders, and it is worth braving only if the date trade is the point of your visit.
Winter nights are cool, near 9 to 11C. Most of the year's modest rain, rarely more than 20 mm in a month, falls in this half of the year. October and April work if you sightsee early, then hide indoors from noon. Weekends bring families from Dammam and Riyadh to the farm stays, so book a mazra in advance for a Thursday or Friday night.
