Lampang's airport is only about 2 km from town, a 10 to 15 minute drive, with Thai AirAsia flights to Bangkok Don Mueang. No public transport runs from the terminal, so plan on a taxi, a hotel pick-up or a car. It is open roughly 07:30 to 19:30 and closed overnight.

Lampang's terminal is small and quiet. This is what it has, and what to sort out in town before you fly.

What to expect
Lampang Airport (LPT) sits in Phra Bat subdistrict on the southern edge of Lampang town in northern Thailand, about 2 km from the centre, and is run by the Department of Airports. Its only scheduled route is Thai AirAsia to Bangkok Don Mueang. It suits visitors to Lampang's old town, the Thai Elephant Conservation Center and Wat Phra That Lampang Luang who would rather skip the drive from Chiang Mai.
One of Thailand's oldest airfields
Lampang's airfield was established on 7 November 1923 and featured in an air show that toured northern Thailand in February 1924. By 1941 it had two hangars and a grass runway, and the Royal Thai Air Force maintained it as a military landing ground. Japanese troops occupied it on 12 December 1941, and in early 1942 work began to turn it into a heavy bomber base. At one point 47 Japanese and Thai aircraft were crowded onto the field, flying missions against a Chinese Nationalist 93rd Division base at Loi Moei.
Peace brought airline service. Thai Airways Company began DC-3 flights in 1946, a control tower followed in 1953, and in 1965 the Department of Commercial Aviation completed a concrete passenger terminal and a five-storey tower. The runway, taxiway and apron were resurfaced and the terminal enlarged in 1986, and a DVOR/DME navigation aid costing 25 million baht went up in 1991.
The terminal that opened in 2015
Construction of the present terminal began in 2012 on a budget of 236 million baht. It partly opened on 27 September 2015 and opened to the public on 22 October 2015, recognisable by its tiered Lanna-style roofs. Inside it is small and simple: three check-in counters, separate arrival and departure halls, two VIP rooms and one shop selling drinks and snacks. There is no restaurant, no bank and no lounge, so eat in town before you leave.
The aerodrome's published hours are 07:30 to 19:30 local time, and outside the windows around each flight most counters are unstaffed. There is no customs or immigration service, so every passenger here is on a domestic flight. You cannot wait overnight in the building.
A short runway and an apron for three 737s
The runway, 18/36, is about 1,975 m long and 30 m wide, with an apron of 60 by 250 m that can hold three Boeing 737-400s and seven helicopters at once. The airfield lies 247 m above sea level with Category 5 fire cover. A plan in the 2016 budget year proposed lengthening the runway to between 2,150 and 2,200 m and adding two more aircraft stands.
Passenger numbers have swung widely. Lampang handled 22,343 passengers in 2011, grew to 261,428 in 2015, and recorded 179,228 in 2025 with 1,990 aircraft movements, still well below that peak.
Thai AirAsia's twice-daily Don Mueang service
Thai AirAsia flies to Bangkok Don Mueang, usually twice a day, in about 1 hour 10 minutes. There are no flights to Suvarnabhumi or to other Thai cities, so a trip to the south means connecting in Bangkok. With a single airline on the route, book early for Songkran in April and the New Year.
A quieter gateway to northern Thailand
Lampang works as a quieter gateway to the north. The airport is so close to the centre that you can reach your hotel within half an hour of landing. Chiang Mai has far more flights and international links, so it makes sense to compare both airports when booking; flying into one and out of the other is a common way to see Lampang without backtracking.
Arrive about an hour before departure. Check-in takes minutes with three counters and one flight at a time, but the counters only open around the departure window.
Landside and airside
Landside is the check-in hall and the arrivals area. Airside is the departure lounge after security, where you wait to walk out to the aircraft. At a terminal this size the two are only a few steps apart.

Getting to & from the airport
The town centre is close, and there is no public transport from the terminal. Plan on a taxi, a hotel pick-up or a car. The centre is a ten to fifteen-minute drive, but no public transport runs from the terminal. Taxis and local drivers wait for the Bangkok flights; there is no meter culture in Lampang, so agree the fare to your hotel before setting off. Many hotels and guesthouses collect guests for free or a small fee if you send your flight number when booking. Car rental is available at the airport; driving is on the left, and Chiang Mai is about two hours north-west on Highway 11. For a day covering Wat Phra That Lampang Luang and the Thai Elephant Conservation Center, or a transfer on to Chiang Mai, a car with a driver from bookingMentor meets you in arrivals at a price fixed before you fly.
Car hire with driver
