What to expect

Thai AirAsia is the Thai low-cost airline of the AirAsia group and the largest operator at Bangkok's Don Mueang International Airport. It started flying on 4 February 2004 and is run by Asia Aviation, a company listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand.

From Don Mueang it covers almost every Thai airport with jet service, from Chiang Rai and Udon Thani in the north and north-east to Hat Yai, Narathiwat and Krabi in the south, plus a few domestic routes from Suvarnabhumi. Phuket and Chiang Mai are bases too, with their own international flights.

Abroad, the network reaches China, India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Nepal. South Asia is well covered from Bangkok, with links to Kolkata, Chennai, Kathmandu, Colombo and Malé, and short hops reach Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore for travellers moving on after a stay in Thailand.

How did Thai AirAsia start?

Thai AirAsia was set up on 12 November 2003 as a joint venture between Malaysia's AirAsia and Shin Corporation, and it flew its first services on 4 February 2004 from Don Mueang to Hat Yai, Phuket and Chiang Mai. Asia Aviation took over Shin's 50% stake in February 2006, and management bought all of Asia Aviation in May 2007. Today Thai AirAsia is 55% owned by Asia Aviation, listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand as AAV, and 45% by the AirAsia group. The chief executive is Santisuk Klongchaiya.

The airline has moved airports more than once. It shifted to the new Suvarnabhumi in 2007, consolidated everything back at Don Mueang on 1 October 2012 and restarted some Suvarnabhumi flights on 25 September 2020. That history is why both Bangkok airports appear in its timetable today.

Is Thai AirAsia punctual?

The data firm Cirium named Thai AirAsia the most reliable airline in Asia for 2022, with 91.56% of flights on time.

  5. 05

    Check which Bangkok airport

Most Thai AirAsia flights use Don Mueang (DMK), not Suvarnabhumi (BKK). Arriving at Suvarnabhumi on another airline means crossing the city, so leave several hours between the two flights or book them on different days.
