In short

Naples' pizzeria of record in Forcella, making pizza since 1870 and listed in the MICHELIN Guide. The margherita is the classic order at a low price, and the queue is part of the visit; takeaway is possible.

L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele is a Neapolitan pizzeria at Via Cesare Sersale 1/7 in the Forcella district of Naples, making pizza since 1870. It suits anyone who wants a classic Naples pizza at a low price and is willing to queue. Napoli Centrale station at Piazza Garibaldi is about ten minutes away on foot.

The Margherita, the Marinara and the short menu

Only four, according to the pizzeria's own website, and the two classics are the ones most people order. The Margherita comes with tomato, fior di latte and basil, and the Marinara with tomato, garlic and oregano. The short menu is deliberate: the kitchen puts everything into a soft, blistered crust and simple toppings, and the pizzeria has kept that formula for well over a century.

The Michelin Guide includes Da Michele in its Italy selection and puts it in its lowest price band. A pizza and a drink here is one of the cheapest good meals in central Naples. A typical visit lasts under an hour.

New pizzerias in Campania and abroad

The family has since opened more pizzerias in Campania, in Salerno (2021), Aversa and Pompei (2023) and Caserta (2024), and franchises carry the name to Rome, Milan, Barcelona, London, Tokyo and Fukuoka. The original on Via Cesare Sersale is the one with the history.

Maradona, Julia Roberts and other famous diners

Over 150 years the pizzeria has fed Neapolitans and a long list of visitors. Diego Maradona and Julia Roberts are the names it mentions first, along with director Oliver Stone, racing driver Nico Rosberg and photographer Oliviero Toscani. Da Michele also says its pizza was the first to be certified on blockchain, through the Authentico platform that traces its supply chain.

Plain, noisy rooms and shared tables

The dining rooms are plain and noisy. When it is busy, tables are shared, and solo diners often end up chatting with their neighbours. Locals and travellers mix in roughly equal measure, and service is quick because tables need to turn.

From the pizzeria it is a short walk to the old town's main streets, so Da Michele fits well at the start or end of a day exploring Spaccanapoli.
