In short

Massimo Bottura's three-MICHELIN-star tasting-menu restaurant in central Modena, open since 1995 and about 15 minutes' walk from the station. It is a once-in-a-lifetime meal built on Italian ingredients, priced as fine dining and booked months ahead.

Osteria Francescana is chef Massimo Bottura's three Michelin star restaurant at Via Stella 22, in the historic centre of Modena in Emilia Romagna. It suits travellers planning a once-in-a-lifetime meal around Italian ingredients, and who can book months ahead. Bottura opened it in 1995. Modena station is about a 15 minute walk away, and high speed trains reach Bologna in under half an hour.

Two World's 50 Best titles and Bottura's Emilian cooking

The restaurant took first place in The World's 50 Best Restaurants in 2016 and again in 2018, the first Italian restaurant to top the list. Before that it ranked third in 2013 and 2014 and second in 2015. Those results, together with three Michelin stars, made Bottura one of the best known chefs in the world.

His cooking takes the staples of Emilia Romagna, such as Parmigiano Reggiano, balsamic vinegar of Modena and fresh pasta, and reworks them with humour and an artist's eye. The dining room is small and intimate.

Tasting menus, arrival times and group rules

Both a tasting menu and à la carte dishes are served at lunch and dinner, though tables of five or more must all take the tasting menu. Lunch guests arrive at 12:30 or 13:00 and dinner guests at 20:00 or 20:30; the restaurant says the meal lasts about three hours, depending on the menu chosen. Guests must be at least 12 years old. There is no formal dress code, and smart casual is suggested.

Tell the restaurant about allergies and dietary needs at least a week ahead. Dishes are adapted, and a vegetarian option is available.

Visiting Modena's balsamic and Parmigiano makers

Staying overnight in Modena leaves time to visit a balsamic vinegar producer or a Parmigiano dairy the next morning.

Options for solo diners and when bookings open

Release dates for the next year are already published: tables for May 2027 open on 2 November 2026 and for June 2027 on 1 December 2026, each at 10:00 Italy time.
