What to expect

LATAM Airlines Colombia, once called AIRES and later LAN Colombia, is the Colombian member of LATAM Airlines Group and the second largest airline in Colombia after Avianca. From its hub at El Dorado International Airport in Bogota and a focus city at Jose Maria Cordova International in Medellin, it runs a domestic Airbus A320 network and a handful of flights to the Caribbean, the Andes and Florida. It suits travellers moving between Colombian cities on a budget and people connecting into the wider LATAM network.

From AIRES to LATAM

The airline was founded on 2 October 1980 as Aerovias de Integracion Regional, or AIRES, and started flying on 23 February 1981 with small turboprops such as the Embraer Bandeirante. For most of its first three decades it was a regional carrier serving smaller Colombian towns. In November 1998 it opened a Caribbean base in Barranquilla, and on 13 December 2000 it began its first international service, twice a week from Barranquilla to Oranjestad in Aruba.

AIRES entered the jet age in 2009 with Boeing 737-700s and repositioned itself as a low-cost airline. LAN Airlines announced on 28 October 2010 that it would buy 98% of the company and completed the purchase of 98.9% of the shares on 26 November 2010. The airline was renamed LAN Colombia on 3 December 2011 and took the LATAM Airlines Colombia name on 5 May 2016, when LAN and Brazil's TAM moved to one shared brand.

Where does LATAM Airlines Colombia fly?

The domestic network is the core of the business. Bogota links with cities across the country, including Medellin, Barranquilla and the island of San Andres, and Medellin acts as a second base with its own point-to-point flights. The infobox count for the airline is 21 destinations in all.

Internationally, LATAM Airlines Colombia flies to Oranjestad in Aruba, Willemstad in Curacao, Quito, Lima, Sao Paulo, Miami, Orlando and Caracas. Routes to Cancun, Punta Cana, Fort Lauderdale, New York JFK and Maracaibo have been dropped over the years. Lufthansa codeshares on some LATAM Colombia flights.

Fleet and aircraft

The fleet is a single type: about 36 Airbus A320s, each configured with 174 economy seats. Running one aircraft model keeps costs and crew training simple, and it means the cabin is much the same on every flight. The Boeing 737-700s flown from 2009 were retired by 2014, and the Dash 8 turboprops that once served small regional airports have gone too. Long-haul flights from Bogota are flown by other LATAM airlines, mainly on Boeing 787s from Sao Paulo, Lima and Santiago.

LATAM Airlines Colombia is in no alliance. The group left oneworld on 1 May 2020 and works with Delta Air Lines through a joint venture covering the United States and South America, which lets passengers connect from Bogota or Medellin to Delta's US network on one ticket. LATAM Pass is the frequent flyer programme across all LATAM airlines and replaced LANPass in 2016.

Baggage allowance

On LATAM Colombia, the bag allowance follows your fare type, cabin and route, and the exact figure is printed on your 4C e-ticket.

Cabin bag only

The lightest domestic fare includes only a small personal item; higher fares add a cabin bag and checked bag.

Every seat on the A320 is economy, so there is no business class on this airline's own flights. Domestic fare brands start with a basic fare that covers a small personal item only, and checked bags, a larger cabin bag and seat choice cost extra. Buying a higher fare or adding a bag online at booking is cheaper than paying at the airport. El Dorado is a busy airport and domestic departures can involve long walks, so arrive in good time and check in online through the LATAM app.

For the Caribbean coast, the old AIRES base in Barranquilla still matters: the city is a gateway to Santa Marta, Tayrona National Park and the Aruba and Curacao routes. San Andres is popular with Colombian holidaymakers and fills up around Christmas, Easter and the mid-year school holidays, so book those dates early.

Pro tip: flying to San Andrés? A tourist card must be bought before boarding; allow time at the airport.
