The Musée de Montmartre fills one of the hill's oldest houses, about 300 m from Place du Tertre, where Renoir, Suzanne Valadon and Maurice Utrillo once worked, with gardens over the Clos Montmartre vineyard. Admission is €14, or €16 during exhibitions, and under-10s go free. It opens daily 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:15. Most people spend about an hour and a half.
The Musée de Montmartre is the museum of the hill's artistic history, at 12 rue Cortot in Paris's 18th arrondissement, about 300 metres from Place du Tertre. Renoir, Suzanne Valadon and Maurice Utrillo all had studios on the site, and its gardens look over the Clos Montmartre vineyard. It suits visitors to Montmartre who want to understand its bohemian past, and it opens every day.
The museum opened in 1960 in a 17th-century house, the Maison du Bel Air, the oldest house in Montmartre. The site also includes the Hôtel Demarne. Pierre-Auguste Renoir had a studio here in 1876, when he painted La Balançoire and Le Bal du Moulin de la Galette. Suzanne Valadon moved here in 1912 with her son Maurice Utrillo and André Utter, and Émile Bernard, Raoul Dufy and Othon Friesz also worked on the site. The museum was classified as a Musée de France in 2003, and Valadon's studio and the Hôtel Demarne were renovated in 2014.
The collections tell the hill's story through paintings, posters, photographs and manuscripts, focused on bohemian life and the cabarets. Look for Steinlen's poster for the Chat Noir, Toulouse-Lautrec's Divan Japonais and Utrillo's Place Pigalle. The restored studio and apartment of Suzanne Valadon show how artists lived and worked here.
Outside, the Renoir Gardens have been replanted with reference to his paintings, including the swing of La Balançoire. They overlook the Clos Montmartre vineyard, first planted in the Middle Ages and replanted in 1933. It still produces wine, and the Fête des Vendanges harvest festival takes over the hill each October.
