Eugène Delacroix spent his last years in this apartment and studio on rue de Furstemberg in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, now a national museum attached to the Louvre, with a walled garden. A Louvre ticket admits you free on the same or next opening day. Weekday hours are 12:00 to 17:30, weekends from 10:00, and it closes on Tuesdays. An hour is enough for this calm stop.
The Musée National Eugène Delacroix is the last apartment and studio of the Romantic painter Eugène Delacroix, at 6 rue de Furstemberg in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Paris's 6th arrondissement. It belongs to the Louvre, and a Louvre ticket gets you in free on the same or the next opening day. It suits visitors who want a calm hour and a walled garden after the big museums.
Delacroix (1798 to 1863), a leading painter of French Romanticism, moved into the apartment at the end of 1857 to be close to the church of Saint-Sulpice, where he was painting murals. He had a studio built in the garden behind it and lived here until his death on 13 August 1863. The visit covers his apartment, the studio and the garden, one of the few quiet green spaces in this part of central Paris.
The collection brings together paintings, drawings, prints and letters by Delacroix, with documents on his life and working methods and studies and sketches for larger works. La Madeleine dans le désert, a painting that Baudelaire admired, is among the best known. Small temporary exhibitions look at his circle of friends and his influence on later artists. In autumn 2026 two are on: Delacroix. Horses and Other Animals (12 September 2026 to 18 April 2027) and Karen Knorr at the Musée Delacroix (5 November 2026 to 3 January 2027).
His murals in a side chapel of the church of Saint-Sulpice, about 600 metres away, make a natural second stop. The church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés is about 200 metres from the museum, and the Musée d'Orsay about a kilometre.
The Paris tourist office lists a full-price ticket at about €9 in 2026. Entry is free for under-18s, on the first Sunday of each month and on 14 July, and with a Louvre ticket on the same or the next opening day; a combined ticket is also sold. The museum is closed on Tuesday. On weekdays it opens at 12:00, and at weekends at 10:00, closing at 17:30, with last entry about 30 minutes before closing. On some dates there are evening openings until 20:30.
Weekend mornings give the longest visit and the quietest garden. An hour is enough. The building is historic and the apartment is reached by stairs. There is a bookshop.
Saint-Germain-des-Prés on metro line 4 is about 250 metres away, and Mabillon on line 10 is also close. Place de Furstemberg is right outside the door.
