The National WWII Museum is the official national museum of the Second World War in the United States, at 945 Magazine Street in the Warehouse District of New Orleans, Louisiana, a short walk from the French Quarter. It suits history readers, families with older children and veterans' relatives, and it needs most of a day.

Stephen Ambrose, Higgins boats and the 2000 opening

The museum grew from an idea of the historian Stephen Ambrose and opened on 6 June 2000, the 56th anniversary of D-Day, as the National D-Day Museum. New Orleans was the natural home: Andrew Higgins designed and built the Higgins boats, the landing craft used on D-Day and across the Pacific, in the city. In 2003 Congress designated it America's National World War II Museum, and it took its present name in 2006 as it grew to cover the whole war.

Pavilions and galleries across the campus

The campus spreads across several buildings. The Louisiana Memorial Pavilion holds a restored Higgins boat and the home front and D-Day galleries. Campaigns of Courage presents the Road to Berlin and the Road to Tokyo through immersive rooms. The Boeing Center hangs aircraft from its ceiling, among them a B-17 bomber, and other galleries cover the Merchant Marine, the Holocaust and the liberation of Europe. Beyond All Boundaries, a 4D film, plays in the Solomon Victory Theater, and Final Mission recreates the last patrol of the submarine USS Tang. Recorded oral histories from veterans run through every building.
