What to expect

Olympic Air is a Greek regional airline owned by Aegean Airlines, with hubs at Athens International Airport (ATH), Thessaloniki (SKG) and Rhodes (RHO). It flies about 28 destinations, mostly short domestic hops to the Greek islands and regional towns, and suits travellers island-hopping or reaching smaller islands that larger jets cannot serve.

How Olympic Air was formed

Olympic Air came out of the privatisation of Olympic Airlines, Greece's former state carrier. In March 2009 Marfin Investment Group bought the flight operations and technical base companies, along with some Olympic Airlines slots, the assets of Pantheon Airways and the Olympic name and six-rings logo. The new airline started limited flights on 29 September 2009 and its full schedule on 1 October 2009.

How did Aegean come to own it?

Olympic Air and Aegean Airlines first agreed to merge on 22 February 2010. On 26 January 2011 the European Commission blocked the deal, saying the combined company would control more than 90 percent of Greek domestic air travel. Aegean tried again and agreed to buy Olympic Air in October 2012, and the Commission approved the purchase in October 2013. Olympic Air has been an Aegean subsidiary since.

The head office is Building 57 at Athens International Airport in Spata, and Eftychios Vassilakis is listed as chairman and chief executive.

Island routes and public service flights

Many Olympic Air routes link Athens with small islands that have short runways and low traffic outside summer. Some are public service obligation routes, subsidised so residents keep a year-round air link. These routes were a key concern during the merger review, and Aegean now places its own flight code on the Olympic Air public service flights.

Rhodes works as a small base for flights within the Dodecanese, while Athens and Thessaloniki connect the islands to the mainland.

Partners and Star Alliance

Olympic Air is a Star Alliance affiliate through Aegean, which is a full member. It codeshares with Aegean, All Nippon Airways, Singapore Airlines and Scoot. Earlier codeshares with Delta, Etihad, TAROM and KLM ended after the Aegean takeover. For a traveller this means a Star Alliance ticket from abroad can connect in Athens onto an Olympic Air flight to an island.

Turboprops have limited overhead space, so larger cabin bags may be placed in the hold at the aircraft door. Check your fare for the checked allowance.

Pro tip: Check the hand baggage and checked bag rules for your fare on the Aegean website before flying to the islands, since turboprop cabins have limited space.
