Potter Palmer built the first Palmer House as a wedding present for Bertha Honoré. It opened in September 1870 and burned in the Great Chicago Fire in October 1871. The second hotel is where the chocolate brownie was created for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Holabird & Roche designed the present 25-storey building, put up between 1923 and 1925, which opened with 2,268 rooms and was briefly the largest hotel in the world. Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and Ella Fitzgerald all performed in its Empire Room.
