In short

Grant Achatz's modernist tasting menu in Chicago's Lincoln Park, opened in 2005 and built on surprise and theatre. It is a special-occasion meal with a fine-dining budget to match.

Alinea is a modernist tasting menu restaurant at 1723 North Halsted Street in Chicago's Lincoln Park, opened by chef Grant Achatz and Nick Kokonas in May 2005. It suits diners planning a special-occasion meal built on surprise and theatre, with a budget to match. Lincoln Park is a residential area north of downtown, easy to reach by taxi.

Many small courses and molecular techniques

A long run of small courses that play with texture, temperature and presentation as much as flavour. The techniques are often grouped under molecular gastronomy, and dishes are designed to surprise. There is no à la carte menu. Plan for three to four hours at the table.

Each night the team runs three experiences: the Salon, the Gallery and the Kitchen Table, where guests sit in the kitchen. They differ in setting and menu length, so compare them against your budget and appetite before buying.

From three stars to two and the 50 Best list

Alinea held three Michelin stars every year from 2011 to 2024 and was moved to two stars in November 2025. It placed on The World's 50 Best Restaurants list between 2016 and 2019. It is one of the most expensive meals in the United States.

James Beard and other awards

Alinea has won James Beard Awards for Outstanding Restaurant, Outstanding Service and Outstanding Chef. Elite Traveler has named it the best restaurant in the world, The World's 50 Best Restaurants has named it the best restaurant in North America, and Gourmet and Business Insider have each called it the best restaurant in the United States.
