Parador de Granada is a four-star state-run hotel inside the Alhambra complex in Granada, Spain, set in a former convent with a newer annex alongside. It suits travellers who want to wake up within the monument, about 100 m from the Partal gardens and the Nasrid palaces, and explore before or after the day crowds.
The parador stands on the remains of a Nasrid palace, the Palacio de los Infantes, built under Muhammad II between 1303 and 1309. After the conquest of Granada, the Catholic Monarchs turned it into the Franciscan convent of San Francisco in 1493, and their tombs lay in the former domed chapel until 1521. The friars left in 1835 and the building served as barracks in the 19th century. Leopoldo Torres Balbás restored it between 1927 and 1936, and architect Francisco Prieto-Moreno later built the structure that now houses the parador. Excavations uncovered a hammam, and the walled viewpoint looks across to the Generalife gardens.
The parador belongs to Spain's Paradores network and stands on Calle Real de la Alhambra. The Comares Palace and the Hall of the Two Sisters are around 100 m away, and the Palace of the Lions about 200 m. The original building is brick. Staff speak English, Spanish and French, reception is open around the clock, and there is meeting space for small events.
There are 40 air-conditioned rooms with minibars, flat-screen satellite TV and free Wi-Fi. Standard twin rooms are about 20 m² and can take an extra bed for an adult. Superior rooms are slightly larger. Junior Suites of about 32 m² add a sitting area separated from the bedroom. With only 40 rooms in total, it pays to book early.
