In short

Agosta is a long sandy beach on the southern shore of the Gulf of Ajaccio in Corsica, in the commune of Albitreccia and close to the resort of Porticcio. It is free and open around the clock, with lifeguard cover set by the commune each season. Half a day is a good visit.

Plage d'Agosta is a broad sandy beach in front of the hamlet of Agosta Plage in the commune of Albitreccia, Corse-du-Sud, on the southern shore of the Gulf of Ajaccio just south of Porticcio. It faces north-west across the gulf toward Ajaccio and suits visitors who want a quiet beach with sunsets over the water.

The largest and calmest Porticcio beach

The Routard guide calls Agosta the largest of the Porticcio beaches, about 2 km south of Viva beach, and values it for its calm. The sea can still bring a strong swell, so check the flags before swimming with children; mornings are usually calmest. At the southern end, the small Crique d'Agosta lies about 100 m away, and beyond it the coast continues toward the beaches of Pietrosella. There are few trees on the sand, so bring shade.

Diving at the Pointe de l'Isolella

Two diving clubs in the area run outings for all levels, at the Pointe de l'Isolella or off Agosta beach itself. In summer, water sports rentals and beach restaurants operate on the sand.

Torra di l'Isuledda, 15 minutes from the car park

About ten minutes' drive south-west, roughly 3.5 km, is the Isolella peninsula, where a Genoese watchtower, the Torra di l'Isuledda, stands among the trees and marks the southern limit of the gulf. An easy walk of about 15 minutes from the Isolella car park leads to it. The Genoese built a chain of such towers around Corsica to watch for raiders.

Viva jetty, Verghia and Ajaccio across the gulf

The resort of Porticcio, about 5 km north, has shops, restaurants and other beaches; Viva has the jetty for boat trips, and Mare e Sole, about 6 km away, and Verghia lie to the south. Across the bay, Ajaccio, about 25 km by road around the curve of the gulf, is the birthplace of Napoleon. Ajaccio airport is about 18 km away.
