Paddle and sail
Hire a paddle board or book a sailing lesson at the small harbour, and look at the wind forecast before you set off.
South of the Prado beaches, Pointe Rouge is a sandy Marseille beach beside a small port with several sailing and windsurfing schools, popular with local families and paddlers. Access is free at any time; check the City of Marseille for lifeguard periods and water quality. Half a day is about right.
Plage de la Pointe Rouge is a wide sandy beach in Marseille's 8th arrondissement, in front of the Pointe Rouge marina on the coast road south of the Prado beaches toward Les Goudes and the calanques. It suits local families, water-sports fans and visitors with reduced mobility, as it carries the Tourisme & Handicap label.
Pointe Rouge is a seaside quarter with a village atmosphere, with cafés, a square and shops a short walk from the sand. The beach has lockers, toilets, restaurants, snack bars and an ice-cream parlour, and the tourist office lists it as suitable for children. Lifeguards are on duty in July and August, and there is a first-aid post. On summer weekends the sand fills with families by late morning.
The western part of the beach is known for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Several windsurfing and sailing schools and kayak and paddleboard hire businesses work from the small harbour beside the sand. Check wind conditions before going out.
The Marché de la Pointe Rouge is held about 170 m from the beach, near the Place Joseph Vidal, a handy stop for fruit and snacks. Further south the coast road passes small fishing harbours on its way to Les Goudes, about 5 km away, and the edge of the Calanques National Park, which makes Pointe Rouge a convenient stop on the way to the calanques. The Prado skatepark is about 1 km north and the Château Borély about 1.5 km.
