A hospital stood on this hillside from the 12th century, and remains of the medieval Saint-Esprit chapel, including a mosaic floor, can be seen from the ground floor. The Hôtel-Dieu took its name in 1593, when two hospitals merged. The main building was begun in 1753, the grand staircases date from 1782, and Félix Blanchet enlarged it between 1860 and 1866 before Napoleon III inaugurated it. The building has been a listed historic monument since 1963. The last patients left in 1993 and it closed for good in 2006. The city then leased it to AXA for 99 years, and after three years of work it opened as the InterContinental in 2013.
