Self-drive by 4x4
Leave the Dukhan Highway near Zekreet and follow the off-road tracks north up the peninsula towards Film City and the cliffs. There are no signs: use GPS.
At the tip of Qatar's Zekreet Peninsula, Ras Abrouq is a protected stretch of wind-carved limestone cliffs where Richard Serra's steel plates East-West/West-East stand in the desert. There is no ticket, booking or gate, so visit in daylight and bring water. With the drive from Doha it fills about half a day, which suits photographers and self-drive travellers.
Ras Abrouq is a desert cape on the Zekreet Peninsula on Qatar's west coast, north of Dukhan and about 70 km west of Doha, known for wind-carved limestone outcrops and Richard Serra's steel sculpture East-West/West-East. It is free open land inside the Brouq Nature Reserve and makes a half-day trip by 4x4.
The cape lies in Al-Shahaniya Municipality. The area is also known as Bir Zekreet. Much of the peninsula falls within the Brouq Nature Reserve, which is legally protected for wild deer, and the cape area has a high concentration of ostriches.
People have used this coast for thousands of years. Archaeologists have recorded Neolithic and Ubaid-period remains, traces from the Dilmun era of the third millennium BC, Seleucid material from the 3rd century BC and evidence of Sasanian-period fishing.
The landscape is the main draw. Wind and occasional rain have shaped pale outcrops and cliffs that rise abruptly from the flat gravel desert, with sandstone cliffs at the cape itself and a beach of the same name on the shallow waters of the Gulf. Some outcrops are undercut at the base, giving them a mushroom shape.
In 2014 Richard Serra completed East-West/West-East in the Brouq Nature Reserve, commissioned by Qatar Museums. It consists of tall steel plates set in a straight line across the desert floor, and visitors can walk the full line from one plate to the next. The plates change colour as the steel weathers and look strongest in the low light of early morning and late afternoon.
The peninsula is open land with no fee, no shops and no shade, so bring water, food and sun protection. The last stretch is on sand and gravel tracks, where a four-wheel drive is the safe choice. The months from November to March are the most comfortable, and half a day is enough to see the sculpture and the main rock formations.
The route from Doha follows the Dukhan Highway for about 1 hour 15 minutes before turning onto off-road tracks up the peninsula. There is no public transport, so visitors without a 4x4 join an organised tour. The mock village known as Film City stands about 3 km away and Zekreet Fort about 10 km. Removing flint or other artefacts is prohibited, children need close supervision near the cliff edges, and summer temperatures can pass 45 °C.
Qatar Museums explains the white cliffs as the result of erosion in soft limestone layers. The peninsula never held a permanent settlement, but semi-nomadic groups camped here, and many prehistoric sites with flint hunting tools have been recorded; because the ground has seen little disturbance, researchers still study that period here. Visit Qatar lists the neighbouring Zekreet coast for camping, stargazing and water activities, about 80 minutes from Doha near Film City, and recommends a 4x4.
