The dirt road
Allow time for the bumpy 6 km track; a 4x4 is more comfortable, though sedans have made it in dry conditions.
Al Kharaij is a largely undeveloped public beach near Umm Bab on Qatar's west coast, roughly an hour's drive from Doha, used mostly for winter camping and swimming. Entry is free and there is no gate, though it has closed for maintenance before, so check notices first. Half a day works, or an overnight camp to justify the trip.
Al Kharaij Beach (also spelled Al Kharij) is a quiet, free public beach on Qatar's west coast near Umm Bab, in Al-Shahaniya Municipality, a little over an hour's drive from Doha. It suits campers and visitors who want empty sand, clear water and a sunset over the Gulf, and who are happy to bring everything they need.
Some guides treat it as part of the same coastline as Umm Bab's Palm Tree Beach, about 6 kilometres away, while Marhaba lists it as a separate beach, so check the location on a map before setting out.
Take the Dukhan Highway west from Doha, turn south towards Umm Bab, then follow more than 6 kilometres of dirt road to the shore. Doha is about 85 kilometres away. Gulf Times visitors reached the beach in a sedan in 2024, but the track is very bumpy and a 4x4 is more comfortable, particularly after rain or on soft sand. No public transport runs here.
Al Kharaij has stayed largely undeveloped. Do not count on restaurants, shops, restrooms or lifeguards, and keep children within reach in the water. That emptiness is why people come: there is space to spread out, the water is clear, and the beach faces west, so evenings end with the sun dropping into the sea. The sand is soft, with no boardwalks or accessible facilities.
Driving on protected dunes or nesting areas, disturbing wildlife, glass and littering are not allowed. Take all your rubbish home.
Camping is the main activity. In the cool season, families and groups pitch tents for one or more nights, cook on portable stoves, barbecue and stay up stargazing away from city light. The beach appears regularly on Qatari lists of winter camping spots alongside other sites in the west and north. Follow the official winter camping season rules and register if the authorities require it. Public holidays bring the most campers, so arrive early for a spot near the water.
Access and conditions change. In September 2022 the authorities closed Al Kharaij temporarily for maintenance, and in July 2025 the Ministry of Municipality included it in a programme to upgrade 18 public beaches across Qatar, so the site may differ from older descriptions. Check for closure notices before the drive.
