Ratargul swamp forest by boat is a calm day trip from Sylhet into one of Bangladesh's rare freshwater swamp forests. In the monsoon the trees stand in several metres of water for months, and the only way through is by small wooden boat, gliding between trunks under a green canopy.
Timing matters. June to October is the season to go, when the forest is flooded; in the dry months the water drops and the boat trip becomes shorter or impossible. Nusrat Jahan, a birder who guides small groups around Sylhet and Sreemangal, points out kingfishers and other wildlife along the channels, and a watchtower offers a view across the treetops. The boats are narrow with low sides, so ask for a life jacket, stay seated for photos and keep children between two adults. Snakes live in the flooded canopy, so keep hands inside the boat. Please carry your rubbish back to Sylhet, as plastic is a real threat here.
