Rock am Ring guide

Rock and camping around the Nürburgring.

In short

Rock am Ring suits rock and metal fans who treat the campsite as part of the weekend, with about 90,000 people in the Eifel hills. It usually takes the first weekend of June, Friday to Sunday. For 2027 only weekend passes are on sale through the official website, so book pass and pitch together.

Rock am Ring is Germany's big rock and metal weekend: about 90,000 fans camping around the Nürburgring, the motor-racing circuit in the Eifel hills, for three days of guitars, mud and very loud headliners. For many of them the campsite matters as much as the stages.

Its twin, Rock im Park in Nuremberg, shares the bill over the same weekend, so one line-up plays two very different sites, a racetrack in the hills and a park in the city.

What happens on the day

  1. Wednesday and Thursday

    Campers arrive

Many fans turn up midweek to claim a pitch. Expect delays on the roads to the camping areas from Wednesday.

  2. Friday

    Day one

blink-182 headline, with The Prodigy as very special guest.

  3. Saturday

    Day two

Die Toten Hosen top the bill.

  4. Sunday

    Day three

Bring Me The Horizon close the festival.

  5. Each day

    Late finishes

Mornings on the campsite are slow and the headliners play late, so the real day starts in the afternoon. The running order comes out shortly before the gates open.

Buying a weekend pass and camping together

Ticket and tent are a single choice here. For 2027 only weekend passes are on sale, through the official website, and camping is booked on top. General Camping is the standard option. The new Boxenplatz upgrade gives groups reserved pitches together, and Experience Camping means arriving to a tent that is already up. Prices were not shown on the official pages when we checked, so compare them in the ticket shop before you decide.

Do not wait for the full bill. The upgraded campsites sell out first, and more names usually arrive only over the winter, and a group that wants to camp together needs to book together.

Work out the whole trip at the same time. Most people drive or use the official shuttles and coaches, since the Eifel has thin rail links, so plan travel at the same time as the booking. If you are driving, plan who is going, how the car will be packed and where you will meet. For more ideas on travelling around the country before or after, see our Germany pages.

2027 dates and the confirmed line-up

The bill is already strong. blink-182 top Friday, backed by Falling In Reverse and Billy Talent, with Simple Plan and Donots earlier on. Die Toten Hosen own Saturday. Faith No More and Turnstile play that day too, as do Bullet For My Valentine and Bad Religion. Sunday ends with Bring Me The Horizon; before them come Parkway Drive and Evanescence, then Arch Enemy and Amon Amarth. More names normally follow over the winter and spring.

Pace yourself across three days. Three nights of late headliners add up, and Sunday's closing sets come round faster than you expect.

How a one-off 1985 concert became a festival

Nobody planned for it to last. The first Rock am Ring, in 1985, was meant as a single concert at the Nürburgring's new Formula One track. It stuck.

The history has gaps and detours. There was no festival in 1989 or 1990, and the pandemic cancelled 2020 and 2021. When the promoter and the circuit could not agree terms after 2014, the festival decamped for 2015 and 2016 to the airfield at Mendig, about 30 km to the east. Older listings that name Mendig date from that spell. By 2017 it was home at the Nürburgring again, and it has stayed.

Camping is the culture. With pitches open days before the first band, the fields around the circuit turn into a temporary town, and for many fans the hours spent there matter as much as the shows. Bands change from year to year; the camp, and the people you meet in it, are what regulars come back for. That is also why the gaps in its history hurt: a missing year is a missing reunion.

Getting there

By train and shuttle

Rail links in the Eifel are thin. Head for Cologne or Koblenz, where official festival shuttles run to the circuit. The Koblenz bus leaves from Neversstraße 8, next to the bus station, and arrives at bus park D10.

Shuttle tickets

Koblenz tickets are sold at the Deutsche Bahn travel centre there from Wednesday to Saturday and on board on Sunday. In 2026 a return was 30 euros. The Deutschlandticket is not valid.

Driving

The circuit is at Nürburg, postcode 53520. From Wednesday, follow the official signs, which will not know about the closures and diversions.

Arriving

Come with a full tank, food and water for the first evening, and your camping ticket within reach.

Where to stay during the festival

Most people camp: General Camping is the standard choice, with Boxenplatz for groups who want reserved pitches together and Experience Camping for a tent already set up. The upgraded areas sell out first.

If you would rather sleep in a bed, Koblenz and Cologne have the nearest large stock of rooms, linked to the site by the festival shuttles.

Weather and what to pack

The Eifel is cooler than the Rhine valley below. Nürburg, at 485 m, averages a June high of about 20°C and a low of 10°C, with around 54 mm of rain in the month (1981-2010 normals).

Nights on the campsite can be cold and a wet weekend is always possible.

Worth packing

  • A warm sleeping bag for cold nights
  • Waterproofs and boots for muddy fields
  • Earplugs for sleeping on the campsite
  • Sunscreen for a clear day
  • Cash for the Koblenz shuttle if you buy on board
