House and garden
Start inside with The Kiss and the Claudel room, then walk the garden to The Thinker and The Gates of Hell.
Rodin's last workshop, the 18th-century Hôtel Biron on Rue de Varenne in Paris, now shows The Thinker, The Kiss and The Gates of Hell inside the mansion and around its sculpture garden. Standard admission is €14 for both. Doors open 10 AM to 6:30 PM from Tuesday to Sunday, and the museum is closed on Mondays. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours.
The Musée Rodin is the museum of the sculptor Auguste Rodin, in the Hôtel Biron at 77 Rue de Varenne in Paris's 7th arrondissement, a few minutes from Les Invalides. Its house and sculpture garden hold The Thinker, The Kiss and The Gates of Hell. A standard ticket costs €14, and it suits art lovers and anyone wanting a calmer museum with a garden.
The Hôtel Biron was built between 1727 and 1732 as a private mansion, with Jean Aubert among the architects. In the 19th century it served as a school, and by the early 20th century its rooms were let out. Rodin began using it as his workshop in 1908, while he lived at the Villa des Brillants in Meudon, and later campaigned for it to become a museum of his work. In 1916 the French state accepted his gift of his works and collections on condition that they stay in the building. Rodin died in 1917, and the museum opened on 4 August 1919.
The collection holds about 6,600 sculptures, 8,000 drawings, 8,000 old photographs and 7,000 objets d'art, including works by other artists Rodin owned, such as paintings by Van Gogh. The rooms follow his career, with marble pieces such as The Kiss. A room is given to Camille Claudel, his student and partner, with The Waltz and The Mature Age.
Many visitors spend as long outside as in the house. The Thinker, moved here in 1922 from outside the Panthéon, stands among lawns, rose beds and trees, along with The Gates of Hell, for which the figure was first designed, The Burghers of Calais and Balzac. L'Augustine café is in the garden. April to June brings the roses, and autumn the colour.
