What to expect

Royal Jordanian is the national airline of Jordan, headquartered in Amman with its hub at Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) and a focus city at Aqaba. It flies to 51 destinations in the Middle East, Europe, Asia, North Africa and North America, and suits travellers heading to Petra and the Dead Sea or connecting in Amman between Europe and the Gulf.

From Alia to Royal Jordanian

King Hussein founded the airline by royal decree on 9 December 1963, and flights began on 15 December. It was named Alia after Princess Alia bint Hussein, the King's eldest daughter. Private investors supplied the first capital before the state took over. The airline became Royal Jordanian in December 1986.

The 2007 privatisation and share listing

Royal Jordanian was privatised at the end of 2007, when 71 percent of its assets were sold. Shares started trading on 17 December 2007, with a market value of 260 million Jordanian dinars. The head office in Amman opened in January 2012. Samer Majali is listed as chief executive.

First Arab airline in an alliance

Royal Jordanian joined oneworld in April 2007, the first Arab airline to join a global alliance. It codeshares with American Airlines, British Airways, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines, among others, and oneworld frequent flyers earn and redeem on its flights.

Cargo, ground handling and Royal Tours

The group includes Royal Jordanian Cargo, a ground handling company and the tour operator Royal Tours. Royal Wings, a former regional subsidiary, is no longer part of the group.
