By the bookingMentor Travel Desk · Updated · How we research

Suvarnabhumi is big enough to need a plan. This guide covers what sits on each level, where the lounges and transit rooms are, how SAT-1 works, and what each way into Bangkok costs.

Please note: Flights, hotels near the airport and car hire with driver on this page can be booked directly on bookingMentor. We list places on merit, and bookings never affect what we say about them.

What to expect

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is Bangkok's main international airport, about 25 km east of the city centre in Bang Phli district, Samut Prakan. Airports of Thailand (AOT) runs it. It opened in September 2006 and replaced Don Mueang as the capital's principal airport, and in 2025 it handled almost 63 million passengers, about four in five of them on international flights.

Almost everything happens in one very long main terminal. Departures and check-in are on Level 4, the airside lounges and gates are on Level 3, arrivals are on Level 2, and Level 1 has the public taxi rank, the bus counters and the Magic Food Point food court. The Airport Rail Link station sits in the basement. The SAT-1 satellite concourse, fully open since early 2024, adds 28 gates and is reached airside by a driverless train. A third runway opened in November 2024.

Thai entry rules and the rail link, October 2026: since 15 September 2026 most visa-exempt visitors get 30 days on arrival rather than 60, and every foreign visitor still needs the online Thailand Digital Arrival Card. Separately, the Airport Rail Link is running under a temporary agreement with its private operator until the end of January 2027, when the State Railway of Thailand's subsidiary is due to take over. Trains are running as normal, but check fares and hours closer to travel.

BKK is the hub of Thai Airways International and a base for Bangkok Airways, Thai AirAsia and Thai Vietjet, and almost every major Asian, Gulf and European carrier flies in. Facilities are extensive: 24-hour lounges in every international concourse, an airside transit hotel, a hotel linked to the terminal by an underground walkway, and cheap Thai food on Level 1. The catch is size. Walks from immigration to the far gates are long, and immigration queues can run to an hour or more at peak times.

What Suvarnabhumi means and who designed the terminal

Suvarnabhumi means "land of gold" in Sanskrit, and the name was chosen by King Bhumibol Adulyadej; until then the site had been known as Nong Nguhao. The terminal was designed by Helmut Jahn of Murphy/Jahn Architects, and at 563,000 m² it was the largest passenger terminal ever built in a single phase when it was finished. Its control tower, about 132 m high, was the tallest free-standing control tower in the world from 2006 until 2014.

Three runways are now in use: one of 3,700 m and two of 4,000 m. In 2025 the airport handled 62,902,183 passengers, 50,471,698 of them international and 12,124,131 domestic.

The eastern expansion, South Terminal and fourth runway

AOT is expanding the main terminal to the east, adding about 81,000 m² of passenger space, as part of a master plan that also includes a new South Terminal and a fourth runway.

Landside and airside

Landside at Suvarnabhumi means the public levels: Level 4 check-in, Level 2 arrivals, Level 1 with the taxis, buses and Magic Food Point, and the basement rail station. Airside starts after passport control and security on Level 4 and covers the Level 3 concourses A to G, the lounges and SAT-1. Once you are airside on an international departure you cannot go back out.

Water, showers & mobile charging

Drinking water

Bangkok tap water is not generally drunk untreated, so most travellers buy sealed bottles. Water is cheapest at the Level 1 food court and the landside convenience stores; it costs more airside. Take an empty bottle through security if you want to fill it in a lounge.

Showers

There are no free public showers in the terminal. Showers are available in several 24-hour lounges, including the Miracle lounges in Concourses D and G, the Coral lounges in Concourses C and D, and Plaza Premium in Concourse G, and in the Louis' Tavern transit rooms.

Mobile charging

Charging points are built into many seating areas in the concourses and at the gates, and the lounges have plenty. Thailand uses types A, B, C, F and O sockets at 220 V; most visitors with two-pin plugs manage without an adapter, but bring one for three-pin plugs.

Luggage storage & lockers

Left-luggage counters operate around the clock on Level 2 (arrivals) and Level 4 (departures), with a second operator in the basement by the rail link. There is no storage airside.

Food & drinks

Prices rise the further you go: cheapest on Level 1, higher at the Level 4 check-in hall, and highest airside. AOT says its main concession restaurants must keep prices within 20% of outside market prices.

The terminal never closes and there are departures through the night. Magic Food Point, the public taxi rank and most international lounges run 24 hours. The Airport Rail Link stops around midnight and restarts early in the morning, and the city buses stop in the evening.

Arriving and departing, step by step

The order of things at Suvarnabhumi, from the aircraft door to the kerb and back, so the size of the building does not catch you out.

Arriving

From the gate to Bangkok

  1. 1
    Walk to immigration

Follow the arrival signs; from the far ends of the concourses or SAT-1 this can take 15 minutes or more, with the SAT-1 train in between. Have your passport and TDAC confirmation ready.

  2. 2
    Immigration

There are two immigration halls, so use whichever queue is shorter. Allow 30 minutes on a quiet day and up to two hours when several long-haul flights land together.

  3. 3
    Baggage claim and customs

Find your belt on the screens, then leave through the green channel if you have nothing to declare.

  4. 4
    Arrivals hall, Level 2

Buy a SIM at the operator kiosks and change only a little money; the best exchange rates are at the basement counters by the rail link.

  5. 5
    Onward transport

Go down to Level 1 for public taxis and buses, or to the basement for the Airport Rail Link. If you booked a car with driver, your driver meets you in arrivals.

Departing

From the kerb to your Suvarnabhumi gate

  1. 1
    Arrive early

Three hours before an international flight and two hours before a domestic one. Domestic check-in uses the rows by Doors 1 to 3.

  2. 2
    Check in on Level 4

Find your row on the screens. If you are claiming a VAT refund, have the goods inspected and forms stamped at the customs office before checking your bags.

  3. 3
    Passport control and security

Belts and some shoes go through the scanner. Queues here are the main reason to arrive early.

  4. 4
    Find your concourse

Gates are spread across Concourses A to G and SAT-1. For an S gate, follow the signs down to the automated train, which runs every few minutes.

  5. 5
    Lounge and gate

Be at the gate 45 minutes before departure. The far gates are a 15-minute walk from the central area even with the moving walkways.

Getting to & from the airport

Suvarnabhumi is east of Bangkok, close to Motorway 7. The Airport Rail Link is the quickest way into the centre at most times of day; after midnight, or with heavy bags and a group, the metered public taxi is the sensible choice.

Security & safety

Suvarnabhumi is a well-policed airport and serious incidents are rare. The usual problems are transport touts, unmetered fares and lost belongings in a very large building.

1Use the Level 1 taxi machinesAnyone offering a taxi in the arrivals hall is not part of the public taxi system. Take a ticket from the queue machines between Gates 4 and 7 and keep it until you reach your hotel.
2Insist on the meterIf a driver refuses the meter or names a flat price for a city trip, get out at the rank and take the next car. The ฿50 surcharge and tolls are the only legitimate extras.
3Book limousines at the counterFixed-price limousines are sold at official counters in arrivals. People in uniforms or lanyards who approach you are not the same thing.
4Mind the heat at the kerbThe terminal is air-conditioned but the taxi rank and bus bays are outdoors. Keep water to hand if you face a long queue in the afternoon.
5Keep valuables close when restingIf you sleep on the basement benches or at a gate, keep your passport and phone on you and loop a bag strap around an arm or leg.
Pro tip: from the far gates of Concourses A and G, or from SAT-1, the walk to immigration can take 15 minutes or more. If you have a tight onward connection or a car waiting, sit near the front of the aircraft and keep your TDAC confirmation open on your phone.

Sleeping at the airport

Suvarnabhumi is one of the better airports in the region for an overnight wait. It is open to everyone landside, there are benches and quiet corners, and there are paid beds on both sides of security.

Rest & relaxation zones

There are no free sleeping pods or dedicated rest zones, but the terminal has plenty of benches on every public level, and the basement is quiet once the trains stop. Airside, the concourses are long enough that the gates without overnight departures stay calm.

The airport does not hand out cots. If your flight is cancelled or badly delayed, accommodation is the airline's responsibility, so go to its transfer or ticketing desk first.
