In short

Saadiyat Beach runs for about 9 km along the north-west coast of Saadiyat Island, a short drive from central Abu Dhabi and close to the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Its natural white sand, calm water and protected dunes are a nesting ground for hawksbill turtles. Entry to the public beach is paid, and it suits a calm swim near the cultural district.

Saadiyat Beach runs for about 9 kilometres along the north west coast of Saadiyat Island, a low-lying natural island about 500 metres off Abu Dhabi island and a short drive from the city centre. The island is also home to the Saadiyat Cultural District, with the Louvre Abu Dhabi and other museums.

Saadiyat means island of happiness in Arabic. Large-scale development began in the 2000s, but the beach and its dunes were protected as part of the planning, and buildings stand back from the shoreline.

The sand is fine and pale, and the water is usually clear and calm, which suits swimming and paddleboarding. Critically endangered hawksbill turtles nest on the beach each year, roughly from March to July, and the nesting zones are protected and monitored by environmental authorities.

Most of the shore is fronted by resorts and beach clubs, while Saadiyat Public Beach offers paid access with sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, a lifeguard service and cafes. Boardwalks cross the dunes to protect the vegetation.

The cooler months from October to April are the most comfortable for a beach day. Visitors should follow signs at turtle nesting areas and keep to the boardwalks.

What else is on Saadiyat Island? The island is planned as seven districts across about 27 square kilometres. Its Cultural District, about 2.43 square kilometres, now holds the Louvre Abu Dhabi, opened in November 2017, the Bassam Freiha Art Foundation (March 2024), teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi (April 2025), the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi (November 2025) and the Zayed National Museum (December 2025). The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is still under construction, with an opening expected toward the end of 2026. Manarat Al Saadiyat hosts temporary exhibitions, including the annual Abu Dhabi Art fair.

Getting there is easy: the island is about five minutes by car from downtown Abu Dhabi, around 20 minutes from Abu Dhabi International Airport and about an hour from Dubai, so a morning on the beach can be paired with an afternoon at one of the museums.
