In short

Salim Singh ki Haveli is a late 17th-century mansion in Jaisalmer, built for a powerful prime minister of the state and known for its peacock-shaped roof brackets and projecting top floor. Entry is paid. It stands near Main Chowk and suits travellers interested in Rajasthani haveli architecture.

Salim Singh ki Haveli stands in the old town of Jaisalmer in western Rajasthan, close to the eastern approach to Jaisalmer Fort. It is one of the three best known havelis in the city, together with Patwon ki Haveli and Nathmal ki Haveli.

The haveli was first built in the late seventeenth century and rebuilt in the early nineteenth century by Salim Singh, who served as prime minister, or diwan, of the state of Jaisalmer. He rebuilt the house in 1815 on the site of the older haveli.

The building is made of the local yellow sandstone. Its lower floors are plain, while the upper storey widens out over the street and is covered with finely carved balconies and windows. The roof is edged with arched brackets carved in the shape of peacocks, which give the facade its distinctive outline.

Part of the haveli is still privately owned. Visitors can enter some rooms with painted walls and ceilings and climb to upper floors for views over the rooftops of Jaisalmer.

A small ticket is charged at the door. The building is best photographed in the morning, when the sun lights the carved upper floor.
