SAS Scandinavian Airlines is the flag carrier of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, headquartered in Solna near Stockholm, with hubs at Copenhagen (CPH), Oslo (OSL) and Stockholm Arlanda (ARN). It flies to about 156 destinations across the Nordic region, Europe, North America and Asia, and has been a SkyTeam member since September 2024. It suits travellers within Scandinavia and those flying between the Nordic countries and the rest of the world.
SAS was set up on 1 August 1946 as a consortium pooling the transatlantic flying of the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish national airlines. Its first service, Stockholm to New York, flew on 17 September 1946, and the three parent carriers merged fully in 1951.
In 1954 SAS became the first airline to fly a scheduled polar route, from Copenhagen to Los Angeles over Greenland, cutting hours off the trip. In 1957 it offered the first round-the-world service over the North Pole, via Anchorage. Jets arrived in 1959 with the Sud Aviation Caravelle and the Boeing 747 in 1971. SAS was also a founding member of Star Alliance in May 1997.
Competition from budget airlines put SAS under pressure from 2009, and it sold stakes in Spanair, British Midland and airBaltic. Norway sold its last shares in 2018.
In October 2023 Air France-KLM, the Danish government and the investment firms Castlelake and Lind Invest agreed to recapitalise the airline. Courts in the US and Sweden and the European Commission approved the plan during 2024. On 4 July 2025 Air France-KLM announced plans to raise its holding from 19.9 percent to 60.5 percent, which would make it the majority owner.
SAS left Star Alliance at the end of August 2024 and joined SkyTeam on 1 September 2024, aligning it with Air France, KLM, Delta and other members. EuroBonus points can now be earned and spent on SkyTeam airlines.
SAS carried about 25.2 million passengers in its 2024 reporting year, the most of any airline in Denmark and Sweden. Revenue that year was 45.9 billion Swedish kronor. Anko van der Werff is chief executive and Carsten Dilling chairman. Besides the three hubs, SAS has focus cities at Bergen, Gothenburg, Stavanger, Tromsø and Trondheim.
