The Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum is a private collection of more than 15,000 objects, from cars to Islamic art and coins, in a fort-style building about 22 km west of Doha. Tourists last paid QAR 75 (students QAR 50), and children under 6 enter free. Weekday hours are 9:00 to 16:30, with shorter weekend times, so call ahead. Two to three hours suits families.
The Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum (FBQ Museum) is a large private museum on the Al Samriya estate, about 22 kilometres west of Doha off Dukhan Road in Al-Shahaniya. Opened in 1998 to show Sheikh Faisal's personal collections, it suits families, car enthusiasts and anyone who likes a wide-ranging collection of Islamic art, coins and Qatari heritage.
Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al Thani, a Qatari businessman, gathered the objects over many years. The estate covers about 530,000 square metres with three main buildings. The main museum is built of local stone over a historic fort and styled as a traditional Qatari stronghold with turrets and thick walls, while the halls inside are modern display spaces.
Visit Qatar describes more than 15,000 items across 15 halls, and newer descriptions give higher totals as the collection grows. It is broad and personal. Eight halls are given to Islamic art, with ceramics, manuscripts, metalwork, carpets and architectural pieces. Other halls cover coins and banknotes from around the world, weapons, traditional Qatari tools, boats, textiles and household goods.
Vehicles are a big part of the visit, from early cars to classic American models and decorated vehicles, and a dedicated car museum area opened in 2022. A children's museum and theatre were added ahead of the World Cup the same year. Outside, Sheikh Faisal had a mosque and minaret built from local stone that deliberately lean to one side, one of the most photographed features of the site.
Recent counts put the collection at more than 30,000 artefacts across the 15 halls, gathered by Sheikh Faisal over about 50 years. One of the most unusual exhibits is a traditional Syrian house from Damascus, reconstructed inside the museum. The vehicles date from 1885 onwards and include motorcycles and bicycles, and the car museum opened in 2022 shows about 300 classic, sports and vintage vehicles. The coin collection numbered about 4,000 items in 2022.
