In short

Closed for restoration since early 2026, the 1907 Winter Palace on Luxor's Corniche is due to reopen in July 2027 as Mandarin Oriental. When open it offers tropical gardens with a pool, tennis courts and terraces, about 400 m from Luxor Temple. The last listed rate was from US$200.

Temporarily closed: the Winter Palace closed in early 2026 for a full restoration under its new operator, Mandarin Oriental, and is scheduled to reopen in July 2027 as Mandarin Oriental Winter Palace, Luxor. The details below describe the hotel as it operated before closing; rooms, dining and policies may change after the renovation.

Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor is a historic five-star hotel at 17 Cornish El Nile Street on the east bank of the Nile in Luxor, Egypt, about 400 m from Luxor Temple. It opened in 1907. Travellers who care about Egyptology history and a Nile-side base for Luxor's temples will want to watch for the reopening.

A hotel built for Nile travellers

The Winter Palace was inaugurated on 19 January 1907, built for the Upper Egypt Hotels Company in partnership with Thomas Cook & Son to a design by the architect Leon Stienon. Lord Carnarvon, who financed Howard Carter's excavation in the Valley of the Kings, was a regular guest, and after the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 the hotel hosted the international press.

The Palace wing and the Pavillon

The original Palace wing has 86 rooms and 6 suites, furnished in colonial style with antique furniture, high ceilings and marble bathrooms. Classic Rooms are about 24 m², Superior Rooms about 32 m² and Luxury Rooms about 37 m², each with a king bed or twin beds and a garden or Nile view. Suites run from the 76 m² Prestige Suites to the Imperial Suite and the Opera Suite of about 148 m², the two largest with butler service. A four-star annex, the Pavillon, was added in the rear garden in 1996 with 116 rooms.

Gardens and restaurants

Both wings share large botanical gardens, a pool with a swim-up bar, tennis courts and terraces above the river. Before closing, the restaurants were the French 1886 Restaurant, which asked for jacket and tie, La Corniche in the Palace wing, Bougainvilliers in the Pavillon, and Palmetto and El Tarboush by the pool.

What changes after the restoration

Mandarin Oriental announced the takeover in February 2026, together with the Old Cataract in Aswan and the planned 2027 reopening of Mandarin Oriental Shepheard in Cairo. The restored Winter Palace is planned with six dining venues, The Spa at Mandarin Oriental in the gardens and event spaces. The group is also building its first Nile cruise ship, with three-, four- and seven-night trips between Luxor and Aswan, due in 2027.

Distances to Luxor's sights

The Mummification Museum is about 700 m away, the Luxor Museum about 1.4 km and the Avenue of Sphinxes about 1.7 km. Karnak Temple is about 3.2 km north. Across the Nile, the Temple of Hatshepsut is about 5.6 km and the Valley of the Kings about 6.1 km in a straight line. Luxor railway station is about 1.1 km and Luxor International Airport (LXR) about 11 km by road.
