Traditional Egyptian food in a 1930s house on Luxor's East Bank, one of the town's most recommended restaurants. Home-style dishes in a quiet setting away from the Corniche, with outdoor tables.
Sofra Restaurant & Café serves traditional Egyptian food in a 1930s house at 90 Mohamed Farid Street, Al Manshiya, on Luxor's East Bank, beside El Waha Hotel. It is one of the most recommended restaurants in Luxor and suits travellers who want home-style dishes in a quiet setting away from the Corniche.
The restaurant is a short taxi or calèche ride inland from the Corniche and Luxor Temple, and within walking distance of the railway station.
Tiles, carved wood and low lighting decorate the house, with cushioned corners to sit in. In the cooler months the inner courtyard catches the breeze, and there is an airy dining room upstairs. It feels like a family home. The menu is in English as well as Arabic.
The food is Egyptian home cooking. A mezze platter brings several hot and cold dishes together, and the popular mains are hamam mahshi (pigeon stuffed with herby rice), oven-roasted rabbit with molokheya and lamb tagine. Hibiscus tea and baked sweet potato are simple orders that many guests add. Sofra has also run cooking classes that start with a market visit.
Dinner with tea cost about EGP 300 to 500 per person in 2026. Payment has been reported as cash only, though some visitors report different prices for card and cash, so check when you order and carry Egyptian pounds.
Sofra opens daily from 11:00. HappyCow lists closing at 23:00 and Pixidia at midnight. To book, call +20 95 235 9752. On warm evenings the upstairs room or the courtyard is the place to sit.
