A barefoot villa resort on forested Kunfunadhoo in Baa Atoll, run with a strong sustainability focus. Families and couples get large villas with pools, Water Retreats with slides, many restaurants and a kids' club. Arrivals land at Dharavandhoo, about 8 km away. Villas start from US$2,500 a night.
Soneva Fushi is a five-star villa resort on Kunfunadhoo, a forested island in the Baa Atoll in the north of the Maldives, about 8 km from Dharavandhoo Airport. It opened in 1998, was renovated in 2023 and runs with a strong focus on sustainability. Families and couples who want large private villas and plenty to do on one island book it.
A seaplane from Velana International Airport in Malé takes about 30 minutes. The other route is a domestic flight to Dharavandhoo followed by a short speedboat ride, about 50 minutes in all. The Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and the reefs around Kunfunadhoo fall inside it.
The resort has 63 villas, built from reclaimed wood and other natural materials, and the largest residences have up to 11 bedrooms.
The smallest villas are one-bedroom Crusoe villas of about 145 m² with a private pool. Beachfront villas go up to three bedrooms or more. The Water Retreats stand over the lagoon, reach about 585 m² and have their own water slide into the sea. Villas have air conditioning, a minibar and free Wi-Fi, and face the sea or the island's forest.
The resort counts 12 restaurants and five bars, including a treetop dining spot reached by zipline. So Hands On and Bespoke serve Japanese food, Carne Diem is the grill, Out of the Sea focuses on seafood and Shades of Green is plant-based. Out of the Blue stands over the water, and there is a wine cellar. Breakfast is a buffet, and it costs about USD 80 per adult, paid at the resort, when it is not in the rate.
Guests can dive, snorkel, sail and windsurf. On land there is a spa with a sauna, a gym, yoga sessions, tennis and the So Celestial observatory, about 380 m from the villas, where a resident astronomer leads night-sky sessions. A coral regeneration programme runs on the house reef, and the Glass Studio and Maker's Place turn the island's recycled waste into art. The Soneva mosque is about 130 m away.
The kids' club has a playground, a children's pool and a water slide.
