Fresh in the Garden is a dinner restaurant at Soneva Fushi on Kunfunadhoo Island in Baa Atoll, Maldives. It sits above the resort's organic herb and vegetable gardens, is reached by a rope bridge through the treetops and cooks a seasonal menu from what the garden grows. It suits resort guests who want a relaxed evening meal outdoors.
Soneva Fushi is a barefoot resort reached by seaplane from Velana International Airport near Malé. The walk across the rope bridge is part of the meal, and arriving while there is still light lets you see the gardens before dark.
The restaurant has no walls. Tables are set inside under the roof or outside under the night sky, and an open kitchen in the centre lets diners watch the cooks. In the evening the smell of herbs rises from the beds below.
The menu is Mediterranean in style and built on produce grown on the island. Herbs, salad leaves and vegetables lead the dishes, and the menu changes with what the garden produces, so it shifts through the year. La Liste scored the restaurant 90 points in 2020.
Fresh in the Garden serves dinner every day from 18:30. Older resort documents list closing days, so confirm when you book. Reservations go through Soneva Fushi, and contact details are on the resort's dining page. Prices are at resort fine-dining level; ask Soneva for current rates.
An early table is worth requesting. You cross the bridge in the last light, see the gardens that supply the kitchen, and stay on as the stars come out.
The restaurant stands on the northwest side of Kunfunadhoo near the tennis courts and the spa. Fresh in the Garden keeps a meatless Thursday, so the menu leans on fish that night, and the most private seat, the Starlight Table, has its own path. Past menus have featured Maldivian tuna with thyme and honey, reef fish with red pepper and green olives, and a children's menu.
