Sydney Festival guide
Sydney Festival runs from 7 to 25 January 2027, with 94 events announced so far, 21 of them free. Programming stretches from Penrith to Bondi, including a fortnight at Powerhouse Parramatta. Book headline shows early, look out for the 10,000 tickets priced at $49, and fill the gaps with free installations.
Sydney Festival is the city's big summer arts festival, held across three weeks of January since 1977. Theatre, dance, contemporary music, circus, cabaret and visual art take over stages from Carriageworks and City Recital Hall to the Sydney Opera House, along with parks, community halls and streets well beyond the centre.
The festival grew out of the Waratah Festival, which began in 1956, and has been shaped by a run of artistic directors, from Stephen Hall in its first eighteen years to Leo Schofield, Fergus Linehan, Wesley Enoch and Olivia Ansell. Kris Nelson leads the 2027 edition, which runs from 7 to 25 January.
What keeps locals coming back is the mix of ticketed premieres and free outdoor events. The 2027 programme stretches from Penrith in the west to Bondi in the east, with a two-week season at Powerhouse Parramatta, so a summer holiday in Sydney can easily take in several shows.

Group shows by area: one day in the centre and around Barangaroo, another out at Parramatta, and a beach afternoon at Bondi. The festival falls over the summer school holidays and Australia Day, so book accommodation early.
Sydney Festival took over from the Waratah Festival, a civic celebration started in 1956, and held its first edition in 1977 under Stephen Hall. Over time it became a festival of international theatre and music, known for large free concerts in The Domain that each drew up to 60,000 people.
Nine artistic directors led the festival over its first five decades, and the 2027 edition under Kris Nelson spreads further into Western Sydney than ever before.
Sydney Airport (Kingsford Smith) is linked to the centre by the Airport Link train in around 15 minutes.
Trains, light rail, buses and ferries cover most venues; tap on with an Opal card or a contactless bank card.
Frequent trains run from Central; the ferry up the Parramatta River is the slower, scenic option.
The CBD and The Rocks put you within walking distance of many central venues and the harbour. Surry Hills and Redfern suit Carriageworks, while Parramatta works for the Western Sydney programme.
January is peak season, so prices rise and rooms fill early.
Bureau of Meteorology 1991-2020 normals for Observatory Hill give January an average high of 27.0°C and a low of 20.0°C, with about 91 mm of rain on roughly 8 days and around 230 hours of sunshine.
Expect warm, humid days, occasional heatwaves and short evening thunderstorms.

Timing & weather
The 2027 festival runs from Thursday 7 January to Monday 25 January 2027, which keeps it in its usual three-week slot from the second week of January to the end of the month.
Booking
The programme announced so far lists 94 events, 73 ticketed and 21 free, with more still to be added. That is up from 67 shows and events in 2026.
Usually at least 30, from theatres such as Sydney Theatre and City Recital Hall to Carriageworks, Opera House venues, parks and community halls.

General
Kris Nelson leads the 2027 festival. Earlier directors include Stephen Hall (1977 to 1994), Leo Schofield, Fergus Linehan, Lieven Bertels, Wesley Enoch and Olivia Ansell.
No. In 2027 events run from Penrith to Bondi, and Powerhouse Parramatta hosts a two-week programme in Western Sydney.
One of the 2027 headline projects: a youth-led installation at Barangaroo that turns discarded cars into hot tubs and saunas.
Yes. Wave Rider, an inflatable installation about surf culture, is set for Bondi as part of the 2027 programme.
The festival began in 1977, so January 2027 marks fifty years since the first edition. Its roots go back further, to the Waratah Festival started in 1956.
Adelaide's festival season follows in February and March, and Perth's summer arts season overlaps with late January, so a longer Australian trip can link more than one.
Families & accessibility
Many events are. Free outdoor projects and installations tend to suit families, and the programme marks age guidance on each show page, so check before booking evening theatre.
