Mumbai's 1903 landmark beside the Gateway of India, with Arabian Sea views from the Palace and Tower wings in old Colaba. Dining spans Golden Dragon, Wasabi by Morimoto, Souk and Shamiana, and there is an outdoor pool and a spa with hammam. Rooms are listed from US$341 a night.
The Taj Mahal Palace is a five-star harbourfront hotel at Apollo Bunder in Colaba, Mumbai, about 160 m from the Gateway of India. It opened in 1903, and The 50 Best Hotels lists 285 rooms in the domed heritage Palace Wing and 258 in the newer Tower Wing beside it. It suits travellers who want to stay at a Mumbai landmark in the old south of the city.
The industrialist Jamsetji Tata built the hotel, the first luxury hotel in India owned by an Indian and the start of today's Taj group. The British architect W.A. Chambers designed it, with a red dome rising about 73 metres over a grey-and-white facade that mixes Indian, Moorish and Renaissance details. A long corridor of archive photographs and documents works as a small museum, and some suites are themed, such as the Rajput Suite and the Tata Suite. The hotel ranks No. 30 on The 50 Best Hotels list for 2026.
Luxury rooms in both wings are about 33 m². Luxury Grande rooms in the Palace Wing have bay windows facing the Arabian Sea or the Gateway of India. Taj Club rooms of about 37 m² include club lounge access, and suites start at 85 m² for a one-bedroom and go up to larger sea-view suites. Rooms face the sea, the city, the pool or the Gateway.
Golden Dragon serves Sichuan and Cantonese dishes, Wasabi by Morimoto runs an omakase-style tasting menu, Loya cooks North Indian classics, Souk covers eastern Mediterranean food and Shamiana stays open around the clock. Sea Lounge, overlooking the harbour, is the place for afternoon tea, and Aquarius serves meals by the pool. The Harbour Bar is described as Mumbai's first licensed bar, and room service runs 24 hours. The buffet breakfast is served from 7:00 AM to 10:30 AM and costs about INR 2,500 per adult when not included.
The outdoor pool sits in the courtyard between the wings. The spa includes a hammam, and there is a gym and a salon. Childcare can be arranged for an extra charge.
The Royal Bombay Yacht Club is about 210 m away and Colaba Market about 290 m. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is about 2.6 km north. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) is about 22 km by road, around 25 minutes by car depending on traffic, and transfers can be booked for a fee.
November to January is the high season, when Mumbai is dry and cooler after the monsoon. Book early for those months if you want a room facing the Gateway of India or the harbour.
