What to expect

Tianjin Airlines (IATA GS) is a Chinese airline of the HNA group, headquartered in the terminal of Tianjin Binhai International Airport in the port city of Tianjin, near Beijing. It runs one of China's largest regional jet networks, with strong positions in Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia, and suits travellers flying between secondary Chinese cities or connecting to Hainan Airlines flights.

Built from four HNA airlines

The company was set up in 2004 as Grand China Express Air to merge the aviation assets of Hainan Airlines, China Xinhua Airlines, Chang'an Airlines and Shanxi Airlines. It received its operating licence in 2007 and began with small Fairchild Dornier 328JET aircraft of about 30 seats, flying 78 routes between 54 cities. It took the Tianjin Airlines name on 8 June 2009.

By August 2011 it served 63 destinations of its own. In 2014 and 2015 it committed to a large Embraer order, and in 2016 it added Airbus A330 wide-bodies and opened long-haul routes to Auckland, London Gatwick and Moscow Sheremetyevo. On 7 May 2018 a Xi'an to London Heathrow route replaced a planned Xi'an to Gatwick service.

Hubs across China

Tianjin Binhai is the main hub. The airline also runs secondary hubs at Haikou on Hainan island, Hohhot in Inner Mongolia, Ürümqi in Xinjiang and Xi'an, with focus cities at Chongqing, Dalian, Guiyang and Nanning. The airline lists about 147 destinations.

This spread of hubs explains its role. Many of its routes link cities in China's west and north, and its large fleet of Embraer regional jets suits thinner routes. International flying has varied from year to year, so check the current timetable before you count on a particular overseas route.

Ownership and the HNA group

Tianjin Airlines belongs to HNA Aviation, the airline arm of the group that also owns Hainan Airlines. It has its own subsidiary, GX Airlines. Tianjin Airlines codeshares with Hainan Airlines and shares the Fortune Wings Club loyalty programme, so a trip that combines the two airlines can sit on one ticket.

The airline is not part of a global alliance.

Tianjin as a Beijing alternative

Tianjin has fast rail links to Beijing, and some travellers use Tianjin Airlines flights as an alternative to the capital's airports when fares are lower or seats are scarce. Allow time for the train and for transfers if you connect between domestic and international flights in Tianjin, and confirm the departure airport on any HNA codeshare booking.
