Trat Airport Guide (TDX)

No reviews yet Airport Trat
Bangkok Airways' garden airport for Ko Chang: an hour from Suvarnabhumi, then a minibus and ferry to the island. Ask a question
In short

Trat's open-air pavilion terminal takes Bangkok Airways flights from Suvarnabhumi only. It lies about 32 km from Trat town and inland from Laem Ngop, where the Ko Chang ferries leave, so most passengers buy a minibus and ferry ticket at the airport from about ฿500. It closes overnight.

By the bookingMentor Travel Desk · Updated · How we research

Almost everyone landing at Trat is heading for Ko Chang or the smaller islands of Ko Kut and Ko Mak. This guide covers the flights, the open-air terminal and the quickest ways from the runway to the ferry.

Please note: Flights, hotels near the airport and car hire with driver on this page can be booked directly on bookingMentor. We list places on merit, and bookings never affect what we say about them.

What to expect

Trat Airport (TDX) is a small private airport in Trat province on Thailand's eastern seaboard, built, owned and run by Bangkok Airways. It lies about 32 km north-west of Trat town and roughly 17 km from the Ao Thammachat ferry pier for Ko Chang. Its only route is Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, and it suits travellers bound for Ko Chang, Ko Kut and Ko Mak who want to swap a five-hour bus ride for an hour in the air.

An airline-built airport for the eastern islands

Bangkok Airways built Trat to give Ko Chang and its neighbouring islands a fast link with the capital. The airport was officially opened on 31 March 2003, and the first flight, an ATR 72-200 from Bangkok Don Mueang, landed on 18 April that year. Traffic is modest: the last published annual figures, for 2015, show 80,987 passengers and 3,041 aircraft movements.

Open-air pavilions in a garden setting

Like the airline's Samui and Sukhothai airports, Trat has open-air, pavilion-style buildings set in gardens in place of a conventional terminal hall. There is a small open-air check-in building and two passenger pavilions, one of them with a café and restrooms. Facilities are minimal, but with only a few flights a day there is little need for more. First aid is available at the airport; banks, the post office and hotels are in town. One pavilion's café sells drinks and snacks, so eat properly at Suvarnabhumi before you fly or in Trat town.

The aerodrome operator works from 06:00 to 22:00 local time, while air traffic control runs from 06:00 to 18:00, which is why flights operate only between early morning and early evening. Security staff are on site around the clock, but the terminal is not a place to spend a night.

A 1,800 m runway without taxiways

A single runway, 05/23, measures 1,800 m by 45 m in concrete and asphalt. The airfield has no taxiways, so aircraft backtrack along the runway and can park on it, and while one aircraft is parked there no other can use the runway. The field sits about 25 m above sea level and has Category 5 fire cover. The ATR 72 turboprops that fly the route work comfortably within these limits.

Bangkok Airways turboprops to Suvarnabhumi

Bangkok Airways flies ATR 72 turboprops between Trat and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, typically three times a day, in about an hour. There are no other scheduled flights. Because Bangkok Airways connects at Suvarnabhumi with many international carriers, passengers arriving from abroad can often check bags through to Trat; ask your airline whether your ticket allows it. Turboprop cabins are small, so keep cabin bags compact.

Taxi fares to Trat town and the Ko Chang ferry

Taxis at the airport work on fixed fares, quoted at about ฿600 to ฿1,200 to Trat town depending on the source, with a 30 to 45 minute drive. Confirm the price before you leave and say whether you want the town, the bus station or a particular pier. A car with a driver from bookingMentor gives you a fixed-price transfer to Trat town, the piers or along the coast to Chanthaburi.

If you miss your flight or want to save money, first-class buses run between Trat and Suvarnabhumi several times a day for about ฿250, taking around five hours. They leave from Trat town, not the airport.

Leaving time for the ferry from Ko Chang

Arrive about an hour before departure; check-in is quick with one aircraft at a time. Leave a generous margin if you are coming off Ko Chang, because the ferry crossing and the drive to the airport together take well over an hour, and the last ferries leave the island in the early evening.

Landside and airside

Landside is the open-air check-in pavilion and the arrivals area where transfer and taxi drivers wait. Airside is the small departure area after security. Both are compact, and you will rarely walk more than a minute or two.

Getting to & from the airport

The airport lies inland from Laem Ngop, the departure point for Ko Chang. Most passengers go straight to the ferry; a minority head for Trat town or the slower boats to Ko Kut and Ko Mak. Door-to-door minibuses meet the flights and drive onto the car ferry, delivering you to your hotel on Ko Chang for about ฿500 one way or ฿900 return. It costs more than doing it yourself, but you avoid buying ferry tickets and finding a ride on the island with luggage. If you prefer to go independently, take a taxi to Ao Thammachat, about 20 minutes away, and board the car ferry to Ao Sapparot on Ko Chang. It runs from about 06:30 to 18:30 and costs about ฿80 to ฿90 per person, paid in cash at the pier. Centrepoint pier has been suspended since mid-2024. Shared songthaews meet the ferry on Ko Chang and run to the beaches. Boats to Ko Kut and Ko Mak are slower and less frequent, so check their departure times before booking a late flight.

Security & safety

Trat Airport is small and safe. The risks are mostly about timing: missing the ferry or the flight.

1Build in time for the ferryComing from Ko Chang, the road and ferry take well over an hour, and queues for the car ferry grow at weekends and on holidays. Leave early for your flight.
2Agree taxi fares up frontTaxis are not metered. Settle the price, including any pier stop, before you set off.
3Sun and heatThe terminal is open-air and you walk across the apron. Keep water and sun protection handy, especially with children.
Pro tip: the last ferry from Ao Thammachat runs around 18:30. If you land on the evening flight, book the minibus-and-ferry transfer in advance so you are not left at the pier.
