What to expect

Bangkok Airways is a Thai regional airline headquartered in Chatuchak, Bangkok, with hubs at Suvarnabhumi Airport and Samui Airport on Koh Samui. It suits travellers flying to Thai islands and cities, and those continuing from Bangkok to Cambodia, Laos, the Maldives and other nearby countries. Founded in 1968 as Sahakol Air, it took the Bangkok Airways name in 1989 and calls itself the boutique airline of Thailand.

Koh Samui and the airline that owns the airport

Bangkok Airways owns Samui Airport, along with Sukhothai and Trat airports. This is why it is the main airline for Koh Samui and has most of the flights between Bangkok and the island. If Samui is your destination, the choice of airline is narrow and fares rise sharply in high season, so book early.

Operating bases are Suvarnabhumi, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai, Krabi, Phuket and Samui. Domestic routes link these with other tourist cities, and the international network covers about 20 destinations, including Cambodia, Laos, the Maldives, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Codeshares with long-haul airlines

Bangkok Airways belongs to no global alliance, yet it had codeshares with about 30 airlines in August 2024. Partners include Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, EVA Air, Qantas and British Airways. It has interline agreements with others, among them Air India, Scoot and SWISS. A through ticket from a partner lets your bags travel to Samui or Phuket without collecting them in Bangkok.

Stock listing and the Prasarttong-Osoth family

The airline is listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand under the ticker BA. The Prasarttong-Osoth family controls it, and Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth is president and chief executive. In 2019 it made a profit of 351 million baht on revenue of 29,418 million baht and employed 3,010 people.

Baggage and cabin space on ATR flights

Baggage allowance depends on the fare and route and is shown in your booking. ATR flights carry less overhead space, so pack a smaller cabin bag. Check in online on bangkokair.com or with the app, and at Suvarnabhumi allow time to reach the domestic gates if you connect from an international flight.

Cabin bag only

Bangkok Airways sets one allowance for short-haul and another for long-haul, and its premium cabins always carry more than the cheapest economy fare. Check the route-by-route figures on bangkokair.com.

Pro tip: if your PG fare comes without a hold bag, buy one in your booking before you fly; airport prices for extra bags are usually higher.
