History of the Boryeong Mud Festival, Seoul, South Korea:

The history of this mud festival has somewhat a humble beginning. The festival first started in 1999 to introduce cosmetics made from the Boryeong region of mud. The festival takes place in Korea’s west coast at Daecheon Beach in Boryeong-si, Chungcheongnam-do, just a few hours south of Seoul. According to history, there are minerals, especially germanium and bentonite in the Boryeong mud, and it emits large amounts of far-infrared rays, which are beneficial for the skin. However, the sheer joy of a beachside party with mud outshined beauty marketing and attracted tourists rapidly. The festival takes place on a period of around two weeks, and the last week is the most famous for the locals and tourists.

Safety concerns during The Boryeong Mud Festival, 2022 Seoul, South Korea:

  • Entrance Fee: Make sure you have properly organized entrance fee, 10,000 KRW (9 USD or 415 PHP) for adults; 8,000 KRW for teens.
  • Expect little from the beach: If you go to the beach thinking you will see something tropical, then you will disappoint a lot. As the beach is full of mud, the sand’s texture has changed throughout the year, but this shortcoming will surely cover up when you start your fun in muds.
  • Higher Food Prices: If you’re on a day tour, have a meal before going to Daecheon Beach. Food prices are much higher there. A meal costs more than 15,000 won. Best to bring food instead of dining at a stopover on the way to the city.
  • The locker Room Problem: The public locker room closes at 4 pm. The sign on the door says that if you cannot fetch the things you deposited before, you will get them the following morning. Don’t forget this if you’re on a day tour.
  • Crowded Beach: During the festival, the beach is super crowded, so you have to make sure your belongings are safe.
  • All activities stop during lunchtime:  If you want to avoid long queues at restaurants, have early lunch before noon or late lunch past 1:30 pm.
