98 Acres Resort & Spa is a five-star, 46-room resort on Greenland Estate, a working tea estate on the Ella to Passara road in Sri Lanka's hill country. The Little Adam's Peak trailhead is about 320 m from the resort. Hikers, couples and train travellers stopping in Ella stay here for the mountain views.
The resort takes its name from the 98-acre tea estate it stands on. In the colonial era a British planter ran the land as "Southerland tea"; today it is Uva Greenlands, part of the Uva Halpewatte group, which makes medium-elevation Ceylon tea. The resort opened in about 2012 with six thatched chalets designed by the architect Maithree Dissanayake, built largely from local wood with straw roofs, and it has grown since. From the grounds you look down through the Ella Gap to the plains almost 1,000 m below, and across to Little Adam's Peak. Bird watchers have recorded 63 species on the estate, six of them endemic to Sri Lanka, and the resort arranges tea factory visits and trips to the Dunhinda, Diyaluma and Ravana waterfalls.
Room categories run from Deluxe Double and Honeymoon rooms to Premium rooms and the Grand Executive Suite, which has a double bed and two single beds. All rooms look over the mountains. They are non-smoking, with air conditioning, a minibar, a private bathroom and free Wi-Fi.
Fees may apply for children using existing beds, and extra bed and crib rules depend on the room.
98 Restaurant serves Asian and European dishes. Breakfast is à la carte from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM, with Western and Sri Lankan choices. The Ravana Pool Club has an outdoor pool and a pool bar. A spa and a gym are also on site.
