Ella travel guide

Tea hills, scenic trains and the Nine Arch Bridge.

In short

Ella is a laid-back village in Sri Lanka's hill country, on one of the world's most scenic railways; since Cyclone Ditwah the train runs from Nanu Oya, not Kandy. Come for the Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak, Ella Rock, waterfalls and tea estates. Visit from January to April and allow 2 to 3 days. Ella is good value; apply for the ETA online before travel.

Ella is a small hill-country village in Sri Lanka's Badulla District, surrounded by tea plantations, waterfalls and forested peaks. It sits near the end of the Main Line railway, and the train ride through the tea estates is a highlight of many trips. Cyclone Ditwah damaged the line in late November 2025: trains between Nanu Oya and Badulla, which stop at Ella, resumed on 20 June 2026, while the section from Kandy to Nanu Oya was still under repair in October 2026.

Ella's headline walks from the main street, plus a tea estate

The village sits at 1,041 m. Almost everything people come for starts on foot from the main street. Two days cover the headline walks. A third leaves room for a tea estate and for the rainy afternoon that usually turns up.

  • Day one, Passara Road: walk east along the road for about 20 minutes to the path for Little Adam's Peak (1,141 m), which climbs through tea bushes to a view across to Ella Rock. Carry on to the Nine Arch Bridge, a viaduct completed in 1919 that stands 24 m above the valley between Ella and Demodara stations. Around four trains cross between 10AM and 1PM, so check the timetable and time your arrival. The Newburgh Green Tea Factory, with a tasting at the end, sits on the same road.
  • Day two, Ella Rock: allow about 2 hours each way. The first 1.5 km follows the railway south of the village before the trail turns into the plantations. Some locals near the bottom have a habit of wiping out the existing paths and then offering to guide lost hikers, so follow an OpenStreetMap-based app such as OsmAnd or komoot. Spend the afternoon at Ravana Falls, about 6 km out, where a 25 m cascade is at its fullest after rain.
  • Day three, slower: tour the Ella Organic Tea Garden, 5 km south (visits at 09:00, 11:00 and 13:00), or visit Dhowa, a rock temple some 2,000 years old on the Badulla to Bandarawela road.

The one thing that needs real planning is the train. Reserved seats are released 32 days before departure and sell out almost instantly, so ask a local agency to buy them the moment they open. Over December and January, even resellers run dry in the last week or two. If you are heading on to Yala, Tissamaharama is the natural next stop.

A direct bus runs to Galle, and a car booked ahead suits longer loops.

Dry months, warm days and cool nights at 1,041 m

June and July are the driest months in Ella, with about 52 to 54 mm of rain each, and February and March come a close second. Days reach 26 to 31°C, but nights fall to 18 or 19°C, so pack a light jacket.

The averages on this page are taken at Badulla, lower down the valley, so expect Ella itself to run a little cooler.

Midyear makes sense here because the southwest monsoon is battering the south and west coasts while Ella stays fairly dry. A typical day brings hot sun at noon and, quite often, a short shower in the afternoon, so start long hikes early.

From October the northeast monsoon takes over. Heavy rain can halt tea plucking on the estates and turns the trails to mud. It also brings out leeches, which wait on the vegetation beside the paths. Wear closed shoes rather than sandals, and carry Dettol or hand sanitiser; a quick spray makes a leech let go.

Cyclone Ditwah, which damaged around 70% of the island's rail network in November and December 2025, is a reminder that hill-country weather can knock out transport, so leave slack in your plans.

Guesthouse dinners, egg hoppers and the main-street cafés

Book at least one dinner at your guesthouse. Home kitchens at places such as Green Hill and Sunnyside cook the best Sri Lankan food in the village, and breakfast can mean egg hoppers. On the main street, Matey Hut and Down Town Rotti Hut are the two places for local curries and kotthu. Rawana Holiday Resort, up on a hilltop with views down the valley, serves a dinner of about 8 small dishes, but you must phone before 15:00 to book.

The main street is lined with tourist cafés and bars, most of which serve beer. Two places stand out for local cooking. Matey Hut, a roadside stall with bench seating near the railway overpass tunnel, is the spot for pumpkin curry and green mango curry. Down Town Rotti Hut, in the middle of town, serves kotthu roti (the beef version has fans) and keeps the beer cold. Cafe Eden on Passara Road, near the start of the Nine Arch Bridge trail, is the place in the village for lampreis.

Tea is the local product, and tasting it is part of the visit: both the Newburgh factory and the organic garden south of town finish their tours with a cup. A Sinhala sthūthiyi (thank you) goes a long way with the families who run most of the guesthouses.
