Standard visit
Ella Rock is a mountain summit at about 1,040 metres above the town of Ella in Sri Lanka's hill country, reached by a half-day hike along the railway line and through tea fields and forest.
Ella Rock rises to about 1,040 metres above the town of Ella in Sri Lanka's hill country, reached on a half-day hike along the railway line and through tea fields and forest. The lower viewpoints are free, while the upper ones were reported at about LKR 930 per adult in 2026. The hike takes four to five hours.
Ella Rock rises to the south-west of Ella, a small town in Badulla District in Sri Lanka's Uva Province. The summit stands at roughly 1,040 metres above sea level, looking across the Ella Gap, a deep valley that opens toward the southern lowlands.
Ella grew as a hill station in the British period, surrounded by tea estates, and became one of the most popular stops on the scenic railway between Kandy and Badulla. Ella Rock and the smaller Little Adam's Peak on the other side of the valley are its two best known hikes.
The usual route starts in town and follows the railway line south for about 2 to 3 kilometres, passing Kital Ella waterfall, before turning onto paths through tea fields, eucalyptus woods and village gardens. The final section is steep and can be muddy. The round trip is about 8 to 10 kilometres and takes four to five hours. From the top there are wide views over the Ella Gap, Little Adam's Peak, the town and, on clear days, as far as the plains toward the south coast. A small shop near the summit sells drinks.
Many paths cross the area, and some locals offer to guide hikers for a fee. Walking on the railway is common, but trains run on this line, so care is needed.
Start early in the morning, as clouds often cover the summit by midday. January to April usually brings the clearest weather.
The usual route is about 10 km return from Ella station, past Kithalella station to a marked turn near waymarkers 166¼ to 166½. A ticket office now charges for the upper viewpoints (about 930 Sri Lankan rupees per adult as of August 2026, collected near the upper section of the trail); the lower viewpoints are free.
How does Ella Rock compare with Little Adam's Peak? Little Adam's Peak, across the valley, is the easier walk, about 4.5 km return on a well-made path from the Passara road that takes most people under two hours. Ella Rock is longer, steeper and less clearly marked, and suits hikers with a full morning and good shoes. Many visitors do Little Adam's Peak at sunrise one day and Ella Rock the next.
Nine Arch Bridge, the stone railway viaduct in Demodara, lies on the way to Little Adam's Peak and is best seen when a train crosses. Ravana Falls, about 6 km south of town on the Wellawaya road, makes an easy stop after the hike.
Getting to Ella. Trains on the Main Line from Kandy reach Ella in about seven hours, crossing tea country through Nanu Oya, the station for Nuwara Eliya, and Haputale. Seats in the reserved observation and second-class carriages are booked well ahead in high season. Buses link Ella with Badulla, Wellawaya and the south coast.
